Ladybird Vineyards 2021 Chenin Blanc Sur Lie - 90 points
The 2021 Chenin Blanc Sur Lie is matured in used French and Hungarian barrels and concrete eggs, with 30% carbonic maceration. There's quite a phenolic nose here, rather leesy with touches of spice and candle wax. The palate is balanced with a bit of orange rind on the entry. There’s plenty of extract here with a textural, almost Alsace-like finish. This can be broached now, but it has the substance to age. Drinking window: 2023-2030.

Ladybird Vineyards 2020 Claypot Merlot - 92 points
The 2020 Merlot Claypot is matured entirely in new François Frères and Seguin Moreau barrels, with 10% aged in, as the name suggests, clay pots. The perfumed, airy nose is well-defined with macerated red cherries and raspberry coulis scents. The palate is well-balanced with fine tannins, fresh and focused, and slightly granular in texture with a very Bordeaux/Right Bank-inspired finish. This is a very competent Bordeaux blend with plenty of elegance and style. Drinking window: 2023-2036.

Ladybird Vineyards 2019 Red Blend - 92 points
The 2019 Red Blend comes from vines that have been organic for almost 20 years and sees no new oak. The attractive nose is quite herbal at first, with touches of peppermint complementing the red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with rather grippy tannins and a pleasant chewiness. The length isn’t great but conveys a sense of coolness and more elegance than some other Stellenbosch Bordeaux blends. Drinking window: 2023-2030.

The Ladybird Vineyards Claypot Merlot 2020 was recently tasted by Winemag.co.za and scored an impressive 94/100.
"Matured for 24 months, 80% in new oak, 10% in old oak and 10% in clay pots. The nose initially shows red and black berries, olive, chocolate, pencil shavings and spice while lighter notes of floral perfume and dried herbs emerge with time in the glass. The palate is rich and broad, although not short of freshness, and the tannins are well managed with a velvet-like texture, the finish long and dry. A wine with a balanced plushness about it." CE’s rating: 94/100.

The Claypot Merlot is our signature red wine and it is produced from organic vineyards that are between 15 and 20 years old. The cool ripening conditions in the 2018 vintage ensured an intense concentration of flavour and has made this an elegant, yet serious Merlot.
It is available now from the tasting room Ladybird Vineyards or from your local fine wine retailer.

Winter is a quiet time in the cellar at Ladybird Vineyards. All the red wine components of the 2023 vintage are resting peacefully in their barrels, developing flavour and texture.
"The vintage was wet but also very cool and therefore Merlot and Cabernet Franc, that are earlier varieties, are showing amazing quality. I expect ageworthy classic old school wines." - Francois van Zyl, Winemaker

What's in a name? 🐞
Ladybird Vineyards have been cultivated organically since 1994, making it the first to produce a fully organic wine from the Simonsberg ward in Stellenbosch.
Organic vineyard management is based on the following farming fundamentals: building organic matter in the soil with cover crops, controlling weeds by physical means, encouraging natural airflow around the fruit, and welcoming the natural enemies of vineyard pests by seeding fennel and yarrow around the vineyards as an inviting breeding ground for them.
We have named this property Ladybird Vineyards because ladybirds are the natural enemies of the mealybug, one of the biggest pest problems threatening vineyards in South Africa. The mealybug is a vector for spreading leafroll virus, and they also excrete honeydew which can lead to the growth of a sooty mold on the trunk of the vine.
