As we continue to celebrate the winners of the 2026 Standard Bank Chenin Blanc Top 10 Challenge, we’re turning our attention to Groot Phesantekraal and their Anna de Koning 2024. 🥂

One of the interesting results from this year’s Challenge was seeing two consecutive vintages of Anna de Koning recognised in the Top 20, with the 2024 ultimately earning its place in the .

For a variety as expressive as , recognition across consecutive vintages is particularly encouraging. Each growing season presents different conditions, and producing w**es that perform at this level reflects the attention given to the vineyards and the decisions made in the cellar.

We are proud to continue showcasing the producers behind this year’s winning w**es, and grateful to Standard Bank SA for their ongoing commitment to recognising excellence in South African Chenin Blanc.

The impact of the Standard Bank Chenin Blanc Top 10 Challenge reaches well beyond the recognition of outstanding w**es, and for Stettyn Family Vineyards, this year’s achievement will make a difference close to home.

Following the recognition of their Old Vine Chenin Blanc in the 2026 , Stettyn has committed its R25 000 prize money towards supporting Stettyn Primary with which they have an ongoing relationship.

For 13 years, the Challenge has linked excellence in South African with meaningful community development. It is encouraging to see our members continuing that commitment and directing their success towards initiatives that will benefit the next generation.

Congratulations to Stettyn Family Vineyards, and thank you to Standard Bank SA for continuing to support a Challenge that recognises the people behind our w**e industry as much as the w**es themselves.

We sat down with 2026 Standard Bank Chenin Blanc Top 10 Challenge judge Le Roi van de Vyver to speak about what stood out in this year’s line-up, and what South African Chenin Blanc continues to show on an international stage.

South African Chenin Blanc is not trying to fit into an international mould. It is building its own language, shaped by old vines, diverse soils, thoughtful farming and the producers who continue to push the category forward.

As the 2026 Standard Bank Chenin Blanc Top 10 Challenge concludes, we would like to acknowledge the panel behind this year’s result 🥂

Chaired by Ginette de Fleuriot, Cape W**e Master, the 2026 panel included Nongcebo Langa, Shane Mumba, Janine van Zyl and Le Roi van de Vyer.

Over several days, the judges tasted through this year’s entries blind, assessing each w**e without the influence of producer, label or region. In a category as broad as , that work requires concentration and discipline. Chenin can present itself through freshness, texture, oak, old vines, lees work, restraint and age, but each w**e still needs to stand on its own merit.

The role of the panel is to look beyond style alone and identify the w**es that show balance, structure, clarity and quality in the glass.

Tomorrow, the 2026 Standard Bank Challenge winners will be announced!

After blind judging, detailed panel discussion and a strong Top 20 field, ten w**es will be named as this year’s . It is a significant moment for the producers, vineyard teams, cellar teams and communities behind these w**es.

This Challenge continues to recognise Chenin Blanc at a high level, while reminding us that the variety’s success is built through farming decisions, cellar discipline and every person who is involved each season.

South African Chenin Blanc continues to hold an important place in international conversations about quality, heritage and value. The Standard Bank Chenin Blanc Top 10 Challenge helps give structure to that conversation by identifying w**es that represent the strength of the category.

This grouping speaks to producers with a clear understanding of Chenin Blanc’s structure and cellar potential. Barrel fermentation, old vines, lees work and careful maturation can all build depth but the success of these techniques depends on balance.
