Sauvignon Blanc for the WIN! 🙌🏻

Fijn & Klein Wines South Africa Sauvignon Blanc 2020

This fine Sauvignon Blanc originates from three unique premium vineyards scattered across the fairest Cape – one in Stellenbosch at 500m above sea-level on an iconic “First Growth” Stellenbosch estate, the second from ultra-cool climate vines in Agulhas on sandstone soils at the tip of Africa & the final component originates from a small Elgin vineyard rooted in Bokkeveld shale.

All fruit is hand-harvested, gently pressed, followed by a lees rich long cold fermentation in a stainless steel tank. A Sauvignon-specific yeast strain was used to initiate fermentation. After about 3 weeks the wine was racked off its gross lees followed by seven months on the fine lees to build complexity and flesh out the wine. The final blend was then prepared for careful bottling to provide you with this fruit-forward, textured but easy-going Sauvignon Blanc.

ORIGIN:
Stellenbosch 44%, Elgin 40% & Cape Agulhas 16%

TERROIR / SOIL:
The Stellenbosch vineyards are at 500m above sea-level on strong soils with a good amount of clay content, the second from ultra-cool climate vines in Agulhas on sandstone soils at the tip of Africa & the final component originates from a small Elgin vineyard rooted in Bokkeveld shale.

I studied Marketing Management in Stellenbosch in the heart of all these beautiful Winelands with the most exquisite wines. We use to love going to all the different wineries over weekends. I have always dreamt of producing my own wine or creating my own brand. And I am also fortunate to be married to an award-winning winemaker that guided me through the entire process from sourcing to blending. But with this brand, I wanted to show him how it is done.

The project only kicked off last year, and we brainstormed a lot about the range and the name, and the Fijn & Klein brand idea was born with the love and guidance of our family.

While pursuing a full-time job, Fijn & Klein is my passion project So I would classify myself as a small business entrepreneur, foodie, and wine enthusiast.

My range currently consists of two varietals, namely Fijn & Klein Sauvignon Blanc and Fijn & Klein Grenache & Cinsault, and we will be releasing an additional varietal this year.

My 3 big loves in my life are my winemaker husband, Chenin, my Hungarian Vizsla puppy, and of course, wine.

Fall in love with our Fijn&Klein Grenache & Cinsault

WINEMAKING:
We take great care in sourcing from some of South Africa's best producers. Our Grenache originates from the Swartland and our Cinsault from Piekenierskloof. Both varietals were harvested with sunrise, immediately crushed, and moved to fermentation tanks. The grapes were cold-soaked at low temperatures before natural fermentation started. A portion of the grapes was whole bunch fermented, and the balance de-stemmed. After 3 weeks of fermentation, the wines were left on the skin for an additional 2 weeks. The final wines were then carefully transferred to old 300L French Oak barrels to undergo aging for a further 9 months before blending to create this soft, fruit-driven yet sophisticated, and a delicious red blend.

ORIGIN:
Swartland and Piekenierskloof.

TERROIR / SOIL:
Grenache: Panorama and Oakleaf soil profile.
Cinsault: Weathered sandstone and granite.

ANALYSIS:
Alc: 14 % vol
TA: 5.5 g/L
RS: 3.0 g/L
pH: 3.55

Total production: 2000 bottles

TASTING NOTE:
Notes of pomegranate, red berries, and spicy aromas. The initial senses on the nose are then backed by a fruit-driven palate that is juicy, lingers on and on with a fine tannin integration, and a good acidity that leaves a lasting impression.
