Summer is a buzzy time on Kleinood Farm. The harvest is in the bag, and a full harvest report will arrive in your inbox early next week. If you haven't yet, subscribe via www.kleinood.com for an insider's insight into our maximum-hands-per-bottle approach.
In the meantime, our focus has shifted indoors, to the winery, where we rely on a combination of tradition, technology and magic, to coax the berries into wine. To keep the team inspired, a bottle our flagship's current vintage is on display amongst the barrels of juice.
A summary of what happened inside our winery after harvest 2020:
"The Syrah grapes were picked by hand into lug boxes weighing roughly 17kg each. In the winery, grapes were sorted three times by hand, before proceeding to stainless steel tanks using gravity. Then transported, without pumping, into the fermentation vessels. Fermented at 24-26.5 ̊C for 11 to 16 days. Then, 18 months in 300 and 500 litre French oak barrels, 15% first fill and the remainder in older barrels. Bottled on 21 February 2022, and labelled by hand. Bottle-aged for 3+ years, before release."
Tasting Notes of the Kleinood Tamboerskloof Syrah 2020:
The nose, starting with violets, evolves into blackberry and bramble. The palate is vibrant with a touch of complex spices, like freshly crushed black pepper and liquorice. An elegant expression of our unique terroir.
"Our wines do not reflect what we have done to it, but express the complexity of their origin.”
While we're working on the Kleinood Tamboerskloof Syrah 2026, you can sip on the 2020 vintage - available from the farm, online, at select retailers, and on any serious wine list.
