Neethlingshof

Neethlingshof Neethlingshof is a place of rare beauty where man and nature strive together to produce the finest wines
(1899)

The Neethlingshof estate lies just outside the town of Stellenbosch in the heart of the Cape Winelands. Easily accessible from Cape Town off the N2, it is flanked by the Bottelary Hills on the one side and Papegaaiberg Mountain on the other. The Estate comprises of 273 hectares - 165 of which boast picture perfect vineyards. There are many natural advantages contributing to the production of these

award-winning, characterful wines of Neethlingshof. Namely a variety of high potential soils derived from decomposed granite; gentle slopes and valleys offering a choice of aspects; the cooling effect of the nearby Atlantic Ocean on the vineyards during the ripening season; and an altitude which varies between 85 and 250 metres. The variety of cultivars grown at Neethlingshof, give winemaker De Wet Viljoen an enviable opportunity to craft fine varietal wines and exciting blends, whose impressive awards simply speak for themselves.

What would our winemaker choose for your wine rack?
We put that question to Danielle and let her make the selection.
Her choices: Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Malbec. Three reds she believes are particularly worth enjoying right now, brought together in our seasonal six-bottle

Winemaker’s Selection case.

A winter morning worth stopping for.
Mist settling across the vineyards while the mountains emerge beyond- one of those quiet mornings that shows Stellenbosch at its best.

It's also a reminder that every Neethlingshof wine begins here, long before it reaches the cellar. In this landscape. In these vineyards. In a very particular place.

What does a winemaker look for that the rest of us might miss?
For Women's Month, we sat down with Neethlingshof winemaker Danielle Coetsee and asked her three questions about wine, Cabernet and the decisions behind every vintage.
1. What do you look for when deciding Cabernet is ready to pick?
When picking Cabernet Sauvignon, more important than simply monitoring sugar levels, is tasting the grapes and deciding on picking date when the flavours have become lush and the tannin structure has become balanced and less austere.
2. Which cellar decision has a bigger influence on the finished wine than people realise?
How critically oxygen management and exposure is controlled in a winery.
3. What are you enjoying drinking at the moment and what are you eating with it?
I'm really loving the 2025 Maria Noble late harvest in the cool Cape Town winter. It's delicious with Cape Malay dishes, and pairs exceptionally well with a traditional Bobotie. Also on my weekend list currently is the Estate Pinotage Rosé. It has such a seamless fruit-acid balance and it is a wine that I enjoy just as much on its own as with a pumpkin, beetroot & herb salad.

Wine is made by people, and we think it's worth hearing from the people who know it best.

Long before a Cabernet reaches the cellar, its character is already taking shape in the vineyard.
Neethlingshof’s Estate Cabernet Sauvignon comes from west-facing vineyards planted in 2011, around 224 metres above sea level. Rooted in decomposed granite and Table Mountain sandstone, the vines carry something of this place into every vintage.
This Cabernet Month, we’re following the wine’s story, from the vineyard and cellar to the finished bottle, because tasting a wine becomes that much more interesting when you know where its story began.

A bottle of wine may be where the story ends, but it isn't where it begins.
It begins in the vineyard, with the season, the soil and the decisions made along the way. It continues in the cellar, where experience and judgement play their part. And then, eventually, it reaches your glass.

During August, we will go beyond the bottle to share more of what shapes Neethlingshof wines.
