Home of Annandale Wines, the oldest winery in the Helderberg valley, Stellenbosch. It was only in 1996 that it once again transformed it back to a wine farm.

Annandale is the oldest farm in the Helderberg Valley, and proudly upholds a long tradition of wine-making. The cellar built before the 1700s can still be found on the estate as well as the manor house. For a long period in the early 20th century it had 50 000 vines and part of the land became a haven for abandoned horses and a riding school. Today, Willem and Louanne Briedenhann, 6th generation winemarkers continue to grow the legacy of family winemaking. UK buyers can order from:

A little vineyard update from our Merlot block 🍇

Things are moving quickly this season, with the Merlot currently looking around two weeks ahead of where we’d usually expect it to be. The first little bunches are already well on their way.

We’ve also been busy suckering. This is the process of removing unwanted shoots from the vine, particularly those growing from the trunk or places where we don’t want additional growth. It helps the vine focus its energy where it’s needed and keeps the canopy cleaner and easier to manage 🍃

Handcrafted also means hand labelled 🤚

At Annandale, being part of the process means exactly that. From what goes into the bottle to putting the finishing touches on each one, there are still plenty of things we prefer to do by hand. It keeps us close to what we’re making and reminds us that quality is built through the small details.

Our larger format Cabernet Sauvignon bottles are currently being labelled and prepared for sale. A pretty good belated birthday present, we reckon, or something worth putting aside for Christmas 🎁

Annandale is heading to Toyota Stellenbosch Woordfees.

This year, we’re doing something a little different.

On 7 October, we’ll be at Grosvenor House, part of the Stellenbosch Museum, for An Evening of Elegance and a Taste of History with Annandale W**es 🍷

The evening takes us back to the early 1800s, with a traditional two-course meal served in the historic surroundings of Grosvenor House and paired with five Annandale w**es.

Considering Annandale’s own history dates back to 1688, we reckon we’ll feel quite at home!

Tickets are R1 200 per person and seats are limited.

Have you made a turn past the farm?

Today we’re celebrating our heritage with traditional boerewors rolls straight from the fire 🔥🇿🇦

The team from Toevlug have brought the gees, and we’re making sure you’re sorted for w**e 🍷

R85 a boerie, and by far the most delicious we’ve ever eaten (if we do say so ourselves).

The vineyards clearly did not discuss their schedules!

Our Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz are all budding at almost exactly the same time. Willem Briedenhann is very happy with the even start to the season. He would just prefer that they do not all decide to ripen together as well 😅🍇 🏃‍♂️

A relatively dry start has kept disease pressure low, while the warmer weather and occasional rain have helped the vines push healthy new growth.

There is still a long way to go before harvest 2027, and plenty can happen between now and then, but the vineyards are looking happy and the season is off to a very promising start.

Now we wait to see who behaves and who causes trouble!

If there’s one day that calls for Boerewors on the fire and a bottle of South African w**e, surely this is it 🇿🇦🔥🍷

For Heritage Day, we’re teaming up with our friends at Toevlug and firing up the braai from 10am.

Willem Briedenhann and chef Drikus Brink will be serving Boerewors rolls with traditional tomato smoor and caramelised onion for R85. You can add a helping of potato salad for R40 👏

Pick out an Annandale w**e from the tasting room, pull up a chair near the fire and spend some time with us.

Great w**e, boerie on the fire and good people. It’s an opportunity to appreciate this wild, beautiful country we get to call home!

A little reminder that some w**es come in sizes made for sharing 🍷

Our 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is available in 1.5L, 3L and 5L bottles, available on its own or in a special wooden box.

2021 was a particularly strong vintage for Cabernet Sauvignon in Stellenbosch, and these larger formats are a great way to enjoy it! Whether you’re putting one away in the cellar, opening something special around the Christmas table, or looking for a gift with a bit more presence. Look no further than these stunners 🤩

Bella, Tjopper and Buck took a walk yesterday afternoon to assess the vineyards! 🐕

They confirm all looks well! The vineyards look happy, as they prepare to bare the fruit which’ll go into your new favourite Annandale w**es 🍷

After their efforts, a swim in the dam was on agenda!

One of our favourite things about w**e is simply what happens around it 🍷

A bottle gets opened, glasses get poured and before you know it, you’ve been sitting around the table far longer than you planned!

That’s what we love seeing at Annandale. Our w**es being enjoyed with friends, family, good conversation and plenty of laughter. Safe to say, the weather understood the assignment too 😊
