There were no chemicals, no “technological advancements” that made the process a process, and natural balance was far more important than balance sheets. It’s an approach that’s not just better for the earth, it’s also better for the wine – as respected critics have confirmed. So, while i

t may be somewhat old-fashioned, it may also be the way wines are made in future. Reyneke is a Biodynamic and Organic Certified Wine Farm located in the Polkadraai Hills region, to the west of Stellenbosch.

When Johan started making wine in an old cowshed on Uitzicht farm, he was guided by a simple belief: "you can’t make good wine without good grapes, and you can’t have good grapes without good people."

In a recent story by The Wine Society , Joanna Goodman sat down with Johan to dive into the journey behind our Cornerstone project - a bottle that nearly broke us in the early days, but ultimately reshaped how we think about wine and community.

For over two decades, Cornerstone has existed to turn wine into real, structural change. Proceeds from this bottle have helped our farm workers become homeowners and send their children to university. But as Johan shares in the article, sustainability isn’t just about maintaining the status quo - it’s about actively restoring past wrongs and creating a value chain where everyone prospers.

With our newly relaunched Cornerstone range and the incredible support of partners like The Wine Society, we’re challenging the traditional way of doing business, proving that doing good and making world-class wine go hand in hand.

A heartfelt thank you to Joanna Goodman and The Wine Society for sharing our story so thoughtfully.

When people ask why South African Chenin Blanc is having such a moment on the world stage right now, we always point to the soil.

Chenin has been called a "hell of an honest grape," and it’s true.
If you give it the freedom to speak, it simply tells you the exact story of where it grew, what the weather was doing, and how the earth beneath it felt that season.

For us at Reyneke, that means letting our Stellenbosch vineyards take center stage. By farming organically and biodynamically, we’re not trying to force the wine into what we think it should be, we’re just helping it express what the land already is. Vibrant, layered, and distinctly Polkadraai.

We’re deeply honored to be featured in The Wine Society's recent article on South Africa’s calling card, sitting alongside some truly incredible Chenins now available through their latest Cape selection. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with producers who push the boundaries of quality and terroir is what keeps us inspired daily.

A big thank you to Victoria Mason MW and The Wine Society for backing Cape Chenin.

Gnarled, resilient, and deeply rooted. This old vine stands as a living testament to the health of our soils and the seasons it has weathered here at Reyneke.

It’s from these deep roots that our Estate Chenin Blanc finds its voice.

We are incredibly proud and humbled to see our 2025 Estate Chenin Blanc recognized in Jancis Robinson’s latest feature on South African Chenin Blanc, receiving a wonderful score of 16.5+/20.

A huge thank you to Jancis Robinson and the team for highlighting South Africa's star - Chenin blanc.

There is something deeply grounding about working with materials drawn directly from the land beneath your feet. At Reyneke Wines Farm, our recent plaster sample workshop unfolded as an exploration of this connection - hands in earth, lime, and ash, shaping finishes that carry the story of place. Rooted in a bio-regional approach, the workshop invited a return to slow, intuitive making, where each surface begins not in a catalogue, but in the soil of the farm itself. Each mix, each test panel, revealed subtle variations in tone, texture, and performance - an evolving palette shaped not by imported products, but by the geology and ecology of the site.

The plasters we developed are a careful composition of Reyneke clay, laterite gathered from neighbouring farms, and lime worked into layered applications that breathe and evolve over time. Into this mix, we introduced biochar produced on site - burned using old vine cuttings - bringing carbon richness and depth to the material. Red wine stalks were incorporated separately as a natural additive, contributing tensile strength, subtle texture, and a distinctive warmth of colour. All additives were milled on site, carefully prepared to achieve the appropriate consistency for each layer and finish. Each component played a role, and each sample panel became a study in balance: texture and tone, strength and softness, craft and chemistry.

What emerged is a finish that feels alive - walls that will hold the warmth of ochres, the softness of chalky whites, and the quiet irregularity of hand-applied texture. These surfaces will line both the interior and exterior of the new cellars, responding to light, weather, and time. In this way, the architecture does not sit apart from the farm, but becomes an extension of it - grown from its soils, shaped by its cycles, and carrying its memory forward in every layer.

At Reyneke Wines, we’ve always held that true sustainability isn't just about how we treat the land - it’s about how we treat the people who work it.

Since 2001, our Cornerstone project has helped our long-standing farm team build financial freedom, funding homeownership and university education. But as our farm grows, we want to push this vision even further.

By inviting everyone (from packaging suppliers to distributors and restaurants) to voluntarily contribute 1% of sales back into the Cornerstone fund, our goal is to prove that business success is amplified when it's rooted in social impact.

Sophie Thorpe from The Buyer recently sat down with Johan Reyneke to dive deep into this new, transparent model, our philosophy, and the relaunch of our Cornerstone White and Red blends.
