Gyles Webb bought Thelema, a charming dilapidated fruit farm, in 1983 with the help of his wife’s family. Fruit orchards were pulled out and vines were planted. The manor house was restored and the first wines under the Thelema label were released in 1988. The ripe pure-fruited wines were a revelation to many and it wasn’t long before the romantic tale of a run-down old fruit farm became the succe

ss story of an avant-garde winery. By the mid 90′s Thelema’s wines sold out within a month after release, making it one of the most sought-after wine estates in South Africa. Thelema is, as far as we’re concerned, one of the most beautiful places on earth with great old oak trees, spectacular mountain views and colourful, noisy peacocks. Situated at the top of the Helshoogte Pass with elevations that range between 370 to 640 meters above sea level and mainly south-facing slopes, it is also one of the highest and coolest estates in the area. The high altitude and the deep red soils are ideal for premium quality wine grape production. We do not buy in any grapes and all wines are bottled on the estate to maintain absolute control over every aspect of the wine production. The terroir in combination with Gyles Webb’s wine making style result in flavourful, flamboyant, complex and long-lasting wines with a distinctive South African character. In 2000, Gyles moved into the role of cellar master and handed over the winemaking duties to the talented Rudi Schultz (one of the famous Schultz winemaking brothers). Our recently released Thelema Chardonnay 2024 was awarded 94 points at this year’s International W**e & Spirits Competition. The judging panel highlighted its excellent balance and vibrant acidity, qualities we aim for when making both vineyard management and w**emaking decisions.

As Thelema’s only estate Chardonnay, the w**e is shaped by several vineyard blocks across the property. Grapes from the lower slopes of our Simonsberg vineyards contribute generous fruit expression and soft skins, which are used during lees stirring to give the w**e texture. Higher-elevation blocks ripen more slowly, bringing the freshness and natural acidity that define the w**e.

The 2024 vintage is now available on our online store. We offer free delivery anywhere in South Africa on orders over R2,000.

SYNESTHESIA at Thelema Mountain Vineyards, Stellenbosch 🎻

On Sunday, 2nd August, we’ll host a special performance of SYNESTHESIA by one of the foremost violinists of improvised music, Elinor Speirs.

Elinor Speirs will return to Thelema in Stellenbosch, where she spent much of her childhood visiting the Webb family.

Join us for this one-of-a-kind performance as Elinor composes on the spot, drawing from the dramatic landscape and her fond childhood memories.

The performance will also feature three improvised pieces inspired by selected w**es from Thelema Mountain Vineyards. Guests are invited to taste along and immerse themselves in the experience.

Sunday, 2nd August, 10:30 to 12:30. Tickets are R350 per person, w**e tasting included. Tickets are available on Thelema’s website.

Enjoy this exclusive tour of our brand home and w**emaking facilities while enjoying beautifully selected w**es and standout vintages as you go.

The main course and dessert will be served in Thelema’s main dining room.
