🐏The Legend of Kaldi:
An Ethiopian goat herder observed his herd dancing with energy after consuming berries. He brought them to a monastery, where monks originally declared them devilish and threw them into a fire, only to find the roasted beans smelled wonderful.
🙇Origins in Yemen:
While the plant was discovered in Ethiopia, the practice of brewing it into a beverage originated with Sufi monks in Yemen, who used it to stay awake for night prayers by the 15th century.
🌎The spread:
From Yemen's port of Mocha, coffee spread throughout the Middle East and the Ottoman Empire before reaching Europe in the 17th century.
Although the Kaldi story is a popular tale, the exact origins remain a mystery, with some historians attributing the first cultivation and consumption to the nomadic Oromo people of Ethiopia.
