This season taught us something...

Not everything has to be chased.
Not everything has to be forced.

Some things are built.

Slowly.
Intentionally.
Over years.

And when you start seeing it…
you realise you were never just building cattle.

You were building something more.

The next chapter is about that.

Follow along - we’re excited to start sharing it with you.

We didn’t change everything overnight.

And we definitely didn’t wake up one day and “fix” the system.

Truth is… we’re still figuring it out.

It’s slower than that.

One decision at a time:
• keeping a cow that holds condition
• letting go of one that doesn’t
• questioning what we’ve always done
• simplifying where we can

Sometimes you think something works…
and then the next season teaches you something new.

So you adjust.
You rethink.
You keep going.

No big moment.
No final breakthrough.

Just small changes… repeated over time.

And somewhere along the way,
the system starts changing with you.

That’s what we’re learning - still.

What’s one small change that made a big difference on your farm?

The cattle industry, like any other industry, moves in seasons.

Over time, certain ideas gain momentum.
They get repeated.
They get trusted.
And before long… they become “the way things are done.”

But here’s something we’ve been thinking about lately:

Just because something becomes popular…
doesn’t always mean it’s right.

Kit Pharo shared a powerful example of this in his Elephant Ad Campaign story, where an entire industry shifted direction, only to realise years later that it came at a cost.

We’re not sharing this to criticise.
We’re sharing it because it’s easy for all of us to follow without questioning.

And maybe the better question is:

Are we building our systems on what works…
or on what we’ve simply seen repeated over time?

The world around us has changed so much over the years. Things that once felt wrong or uncomfortable have slowly become normal, and without always realising it, our own morals as Christians can start shifting too.

We may still feel like we are different from the world, but sometimes we are only a few steps behind it.

This was something that stood out to us again in Kit Pharo’s devotion on the Sabbath - a powerful reminder that God’s truth and His commandments do not change with the world.

Romans 12:2 reminds us not to be shaped by the pattern of this world, but to let God renew our minds.

May our morals, our choices, and the way we live be shaped by God’s truth - not by what the world slowly teaches us to accept.

You can read Kit Pharo’s full devotion in the comment section below.

A lot of what happens on a farm
is outside our control.

But harvest seasons remind us that
the things we can control
still matter.

Some of the best lessons we’ve learned have come from people willing to think differently.

This was one of the main thoughts from this week’s update by

“If you’re thinking like everyone else, you’re not thinking.”

In farming, it’s easy to follow what has always been done.

Same practices.
Same inputs.
Same way of measuring success.

But the farms that improve over time are often the ones asking different questions.

Looking at systems differently.
And being willing to change.

If you’re not already reading his weekly updates, it’s worth it.

We’ve learned a lot from them.

Sometimes the biggest step forward on a farm starts with thinking differently.

Every year, around this time,
the cosmos show up.

No extra inputs.
No special attention.
Just the right conditions — and time.

It’s a reminder that not everything on a farm
needs to be forced.

Some things are the result of
good seasons,
simple systems,
and patience.

And over time,
those things tend to last.

The most expensive cattle
are not the ones you pay the most for.

They are the ones that don’t fit your system.

The ones that need extra feed.
Extra inputs.
Extra attention just to keep going.

They might look good.

But they cost you every day.

Profitable herds are built differently.

They are made up of cattle that work
in the environment they live in —
without needing to be carried.

Because in the end,
profit isn’t about what a cow produces.

It’s about what she leaves
after the costs are paid.

Genetics matter.

But more importantly —
the right genetics must be multiplied.

This week we did an IVF embryo program.

Not to chase something new,
but to multiply what already works in our system.

Because the goal is not one exceptional animal.

It’s to build a herd where those traits
show up again and again.

Fertility.
Function.
Adaptability.

Tools like IVF don’t build a herd on their own.

They simply allow you to accelerate the right decisions.

And over time,
those decisions shape the kind of herd
that performs consistently in the veld.

Genetics matter.

But not all genetics are equal.

A standout animal is easy to see.

The biggest calf.
The heaviest weaning weight.
The one everyone talks about.

But real genetic value is quieter than that.

It shows up in daughters that breed back.
In cows that raise a calf every year.
In cattle that perform in the same environment, season after season.

Good genetics don’t show up once.

They repeat themselves.

That’s where consistency comes from.
And consistency is what builds a herd over time.

After talking about the decisions we control, one of the most important is genetics.

Some decisions only show their value years later.

Zelma is one of the cows our herd was built on.

Over time her influence has quietly spread through the herd.

This is Zazu, one of her grandsons,
and he continues to work in the herd today.

That is how strong cow families shape a program.

Not in a single season,
but generation after generation.

When the foundation is right,
those genetics keep showing up in the cattle walking in the veld.

And over time, that is what builds a herd that can perform consistently year after year.
