He has a passion for clients, quality and a good challenge – meet Luca van der Spuy!
What do you do at Sparta Beef?
I look after the commercial side of our export operations.
How long have your worked for Sparta Beef?
June 2024 - Almost 2 years. Long enough to know what I’m doing, but still learning something new every week.
What part of your job gets you out of bed in the morning?
The client side of the business. Every market is different, and every deal is a bit of a puzzle. Closing a deal and knowing product is moving because of something you put together is a good feeling.
What is your favourite work snack?
Biltong. It would be slightly concerning if I said anything else.
What is your favourite piece of Sparta Machinery?
The deboning hall as a whole. Seeing the scale and efficiency of how everything works together is impressive. It’s one thing to talk about capacity, but seeing it in action is something else.
What is your go-to beef cut for the perfect braai?
Ribeye. Good balance of flavour and fat. Even if you’re not a braai master, it still comes out great.
If you could eat one beef dish forever, what would it be?
A proper ribeye steak, medium rare, with simple sides. Sometimes the basics are the best when the quality is right.
Team burger or team steak – which side are you on and why?
Team Steak. It’s the purest way to enjoy the product, you really taste the quality of the meat without much hiding it. There’s nowhere to hide, it’s just you, the meat, and your braai skills.
What is one thing you would like people to know about the Sparta brand that they might not know?
The level of control we have over the full supply chain, from feedlot to final product. It allows us to maintain consistency and quality, which is especially important for export markets where reliability matters just as much as price
Welcome to Sparta Beef. At Sparta we take pride in the Beef we produce. Our quality beef products are sold nationally and internationally.
