I have worked for Sparta for 6 years and 9 months.

What part of your job gets you out of bed in the morning?
To wake up and know the daily target and to plan on how to reach it at the end of the business day.

What is your favourite work snack?
I like to buy fresh Sparta Beef Biltong from our butchery.

What is your favourite piece of Sparta Machinery?
I like the X-ray machine that deboning is used to classify the trimmings between 80vl and 90vl ratio.

What is your go-to beef cut for the perfect braai?
I love my Sparta Beef Sirloin Steak cut medium rare

If you could eat one beef dish forever, what would it be?
I would eat Sparta oxtail with vegetables from slow cooker pot.

Team burger or team steak – which side are you on and why?
A team burger, because I learn new things almost everyday within the meat industry and my team members are always willing to share their knowledge and experiences with me.

What is one thing you would like people to know about the Sparta brand that they might not know?
Many people may not realise that Sparta is part of one of the biggest beef suppliers in South Africa, supplying high-quality meat products to both local and international markets.

What do you do at Sparta Beef?
I am the Key Accounts Manager.

How long have you worked for Sparta Beef?
16 years and counting.

What part of your job gets you out of bed in the morning?
The negotiation and the problem solving. The sales office is mostly a high-pressure environment that can be highly exciting with the occasional shouting as well.

What is your favourite work snack?
Helette’s droëwors from the Sparta Butchery. A close second are Maynard’s Fruit Pastilles from the Canteen.

What is your favourite piece of Sparta Machinery?
Not as much a piece of machinery, but our Sales and Relationship Management Program is pretty impressive. The ease of finding the correct data is quite exceptional.

What is your go-to beef cut for the perfect braai?
I am a Picanha man through and through. Juicy, beefy and marbles beautifully. I will enjoy it as a steak, Espetada or even as a roast on the Weber.

If you could eat one beef dish forever, what would it be?
Rumptail curry potjie. It is easy, quick, and never disappoints in flavour.

Team burger or team steak – which side are you on and why?
You can catch me in a trap with a good burger. It is one of my favourite meals.

What is one thing you would like people to know about the Sparta brand that they might not know?
Sparta has a presence across South Africa and the Middle East. You can find the Sparta Brand in many retailers and restaurants in South Africa. Truly something that we are very proud of!

How long have your worked for Sparta Beef?
5 years and counting

What part of your job gets you out of bed in the morning?
The thrill of turning tough negotiations into long term partnerships. I get to supply SA most demanding, wholesalers, butcheries and retailers with our premium forequarters and primal cuts.

What is your favourite work snack?
Chilli bites, but I have a serious weakness for our canteen's slap chips. Those golden, vinegar-soaked crispy chilli chips are dangerous.

What is your favourite piece of Sparta Machinery?
The X ray machine – Its like having a silent sales partner that makes sure I never over promise and always over deliver.

What is your go-to beef cut for the perfect braai?
The Angus Tomahawk – no contest. It's pure braai perfection – the massive bone in Ribeye with the long handle, beautifully marbled and build for the grid. Season simply with some salt, black pepper and touch of garlic, then let the coals do the talking.

If you could eat one beef dish forever, what would it be?
The perfectly grilled Angus Tomahawk: If money was no object and Sparta kept a never ending supply on hand. I’d happily eat that every single day of my life.

Team burger or team steak – which side are you on and why?
Team Steak. I love a good burger as much as the next South African. But I’m going for team steak, it keeps me fueled with high quality protein, iron and nutrients without the carb crash.

What is one thing you would like people to know about the Sparta brand that they might not know?
That we are vertically integrated, family owned operation. Sparta Beef is built on generations of true Free State farming heritage – more than a century deep in the Van Reenen family bloodline. The farm itself was named Sparta in the 1940s by Dirk van Reenen's parents who hoped their children would one day work as hard and disciplined as the ancient Spartans. That legacy of grit, pride and hands on farming still runs through everything Sparta does today.

For me it will be Beef Stroganoff.

Team steak – to be honest, the social side of braaing a steak just makes it more fun and the best way to share good memories.
