PARTNERSHIP TAKES ROOT LONG BEFORE HARVEST

The strongest partnerships do not begin when fruit is ready for market. They are built over time through shared goals, open communication and a commitment to growing together.

In 2018, pomegranate grower Christo Nortje delivered his first fruit to Star South. Since then, the relationship has grown through shared learning, a strong focus on quality and a mutual understanding of what each season requires.

Today, Christo also contributes his expertise as an agronomist, supporting growers and sharing practical insight across our wider network. As he explains:

“Star South’s partnership helps us grow smarter, stay focused on quality and bring the best fruit to market.”

Christo’s story is one example of the many grower relationships that shape Star South. Each partnership is different, but the foundation remains the same: listening, sharing knowledge, supporting one another and building long-term value together.

Grounded in our values, growing shared value.

CONNECTING AT FRUIT ATTRACTION 2026

The Star South team enjoyed a rewarding few days at Fruit Attraction 2026 in Madrid last week. It was a valuable opportunity to connect with industry stakeholders, strengthen partnerships and build new relationships across the global fresh produce industry.

Events like these remind us of the importance of coming together, exchanging ideas and strengthening the relationships that help our industry grow.

We were also pleased to be featured in the AGF Primeur Fruit Attraction 2026 magazine, where we shared more about Star South’s journey towards a more integrated and resilient agribusiness.

Thank you to our partners, customers and industry colleagues who took the time to connect with us in Madrid. We look forward to continuing these conversations and building meaningful connections across the globe.

A PROMISING START TO POMEGRANATE SEASON

The pomegranate trees at Kruishof Farm are bursting into bloom, bringing with them the first signs of what could be a promising season ahead.

With favourable growing conditions and the weather playing its part, the first flush of flowers is looking beautiful.

While it’s still early days and much of the season lies ahead, these first blooms are certainly an encouraging sight. If they’re anything to go by, we have plenty to look forward to!

WHAT GROUNDS US AS WE GROW?

When Jaco Rheeder founded Star South in 2003, the name was inspired by the Southern Cross: fixed points in a changing sky, used to guide people through uncertain terrain. That idea still sits at the heart of our business today.

Growth brings new opportunities, but it also brings new decisions and greater responsibility. As Star South enters its next season, the way we respond continues to be shaped by the values that have guided us from the beginning: responsibility, urgency, resilience, integrity and care.

“A business can grow, evolve and explore new opportunities, but it should never lose sight of what it stands for. Our values keep us grounded and guide how we make decisions, how we treat people and how we build for the long term.”
— Jaco Rheeder, Founder and Managing Director

These values are more than words. They influence how we communicate with our partners, how we take ownership when circumstances change and how we consider the long-term impact of every decision. Our business may continue to evolve, but what guides us remains constant.

Grounded in our values, growing shared value.

INDUSTRY INSIGHTS: GROWING VALUE THROUGH QUALITY AND COLLABORATION

Exceptional produce begins with strong grower relationships, attention to detail and a shared commitment to quality.

For Munro Janse van Rensburg, these principles are central to his approach. With farming experience dating back to 1996 and packhouse expertise since 2001, Munro brings decades of practical knowledge to his role as Technical Manager in the Exotic Fruits Team in Star South. Since joining the business in April 2025, his focus has been on strengthening grower relationships, monitoring fruit quality and supporting our partner packhouses through technical guidance, quality evaluations and ongoing training.

From the farm and packhouse to the final market, every stage presents an opportunity to add value. By working closely with growers and partners, Munro helps improve consistency, respond to changing market demands and identify opportunities to maximise the value of every harvest.

“Success starts with our growers, continues through our partner packhouses and ends with delivering the right fruit to the right client. By focusing on quality, innovation and shared goals, we can maximise the value of every harvest and create lasting opportunities throughout the supply chain,” says Munro.

In an increasingly competitive global market, collaboration remains central to success. Through trusted partnerships, shared expertise and a commitment to quality, we continue creating connection and unlocking opportunities across the supply chain.

As Munro puts it, the future is filled with opportunity, just like the vibrant ruby of a pomegranate.

A NEW SEASON TAKES BLOOM AT BLYDEVERWACHT

Spring is unfolding beautifully at Blydeverwacht Farm, one of Star South Fruit’s valued producer farms. Their young Emek pomegranate orchard, planted in 2024, is reaching an exciting milestone as it prepares to bear its first crop this season.

Following a dry winter, careful irrigation has been a key focus for the Blydeverwacht team. Soil moisture is closely monitored using moisture meters, allowing the team to irrigate through their drip system according to the orchard’s needs.

Blydeverwacht is now at the beginning of the flowering season for the 2027 crop. Blossoms are emerging and the first fruit set is already taking place, approximately two weeks ahead of the usual timing. While this is encouraging, it is still too soon to anticipate an earlier harvest. Last season, harvesting began up to two weeks earlier than usual.

The orchard is alive with activity as bees move between the blossoms, while current weather conditions remain favourable for pollination. The next three weeks will be particularly important as the Blydeverwacht team looks towards successful pollination, fruit set and the season ahead.

From carefully monitoring moisture in the soil to the important work of pollinators among the blossoms, every stage plays a part in nurturing quality fruit. Through valued producer relationships such as this, Star South continues creating connection between dedicated growers and markets around the world.
