URGENT FLOOD WARNING – Robertson Area (Breede River)
Please share widely
We have just had to evacuate our homes in the upper part of the Breede River, close to Alfalfa, on the evening of 12 May at 12 evening.
The river rose 1 km in less than 5 hours to reach us. This flood is moving much faster and stronger than the one two years ago, with a significantly larger volume of water. 2 years ago this process took 12 hours ....
We are not experts, but it is clear that much more water is still on its way. The river level was rising 10 cm every 10 minutes when we left. We had to walk out in waist-deep water. In over 100 years, locals have never seen this much water in the area.
Please leave now and stay safe.
It is far better to evacuate early than to be caught out.
Stay alert and warn others in the area.
Safety first — don’t take chances.
