📌HERNIA IN GROWING PIGS
- Hernia is a condition in which internal organs protrude through an opening in the layers of muscle and connective tissues
-Hernia sizes range from marble sizes to baseball sizes
- This pathology is of economic importance in pig production as it leads to economic losses
- The physical defect causes severe damage within the population which may lead to increased mortality rate and reduced carcass value
- There are two major types of hernia depending on the side of occurrence;
👉Umbilical Hernia
👉Scrotal/Inguina Hernia
🚨CAUSES OF HERNIA INCLUDE:
1. Genetic defects
2. Bacteria Infections
3. Environmental condition
PREVENTION OF HERNIA IN PIGS
- Use of iodine to clean umbilical cords of new born piglets
- Avoid pigs piling up during cold weather which leads to abdominal pressure
- Evaluation of hygiene conditions to minimize environmental causes
- Elimination of boars,boar families and other close relatives to reduce further incidents
- Sometimes genetic influences are related to poor environmental conditions, thus proper sanitation and hygiene conditions play an important role than having to eliminate boars or lines
Note: penicillin/streptomycin, oxytetracycline, amoxycillin or ampicillin can be used during surgical treatment of hernia
