The Mulders family (the late Hugo and his son Graham Mulders) from Kalomo imported the first pedigree Bonsmaras into Zambia from South Africa in 1994. The first bloodlines were purchased from Johan Breugem (JH) and subsequently from Derek and Shirley Ivy (IVY), both situated in the Northern Province of SA. As the breed was new to Zambia, it took time for farmers to become familiar with the Bonsmar

a. Through exhibits at the National Agricultural Show in Lusaka the breed became better known and it is now a popular choice for beef farmers.

We would like to thank all our sponsors who supported the annual Alexswill Bonsmara Production Sale last Saturday. We hope all sponsors had good interaction with the visitors and that they got the exposure that they were looking for. In order of value of sponsorship: Taltec, LSCS Mazabuka, Tata, Seedco, Romali, Paw vet Clinic, VVS Zambia, Corteva. Ecobeef, Global weighing equipment, Bimeda, thank you all!! The Taltec neck clamp went to Nanga farms for being the most valuable contributors to the auctioning of the bulls. VVS Zambia donated 5 bags of milk replacer and those were won by Green Barns Farm, for their input in the sale of the females. Alexswill farm donated one heifer to the buyer of most females at the auction: Lake Agro.

Last Saturday, 9 August 2025, we hosted the 20th Annual Alexswill Bonsmara Production Sale.
Twenty-five Bonsmara bulls were sold under the auspices of the Breed Society, as well as seventy-eight commercial females. Brandon Leer once again conducted the auction in his, by now well-known, professional and trustworthy manner. We were pleased to host farmers from as far as Mkushi, Serenje, Ndola, Chisamba, Chongwe, Lusaka, and Mazabuka, as well as many from closer to home. The auction was exciting, and bidding was swift and enthusiastic.

Females were also in high demand, and cows with calves, in-calf, and open heifers will all be transported to their new homes very soon. The Alexswill team is very happy, and we hope the buyers are too!

We want to thank all the people involved in making the day such a success. First and foremost, our staff at the cattle section and workshop — your efforts are very much appreciated.

Elsha and Linda were in charge of registration; Johan and Baz kept a close eye on the bids. Gayle and Hillary kept track of all the figures and sorted out accounts after the sale — a very important job! Roy and Gareth manned the braai, and Marieta was in full charge of all things “buffet.” Job well done, guys, and thank you all.

The bar opened after the auction, and visitors enjoyed the hospitality, chatting, and making connections with other farming and non-farming folk.

See you next year,
The Alexswill Team
