🌿 The Importance of Good Bedding for Chicks! 🌿

At Lenhart Farms, we take bedding seriously! A good bedding choice keeps our chicks warm, comfortable, and healthy.

🔹 We use sawdust because it’s readily available and easy to access, but other great options include wood shavings or shredded paper.
🔹 The key is to avoid fine, dusty bedding—too much dust can cause respiratory issues for the chicks!

Why is bedding so important?
✅ Keeps the ground warm & cozy 🐥
✅ Absorbs moisture from droppings 💦
✅ Reduces ammonia buildup, keeping the air fresh 🌬

Keeping the bedding dry is just as important! Damp bedding can lead to health issues, so we regularly check and refresh it to keep our chicks happy.

📒 Why Record-Keeping is a Game-Changer for Our Farm! 📒

At Lenhart Farms, we take record-keeping seriously! Keeping track of our flock helps us monitor growth, feed consumption, and overall farm progress. But that’s not all—good records help us calculate profit and loss, so we know if we’re on the right track! 📊

Here’s what we record religiously:

✅ Bedding – Whether it’s sawdust or wood shavings, we track how much we use.
✅ Feed – Every bag counts! Keeping track helps us understand how much our flock consumes.
✅ Medication & Vaccines – Healthy chicks mean a healthy farm!
✅ Heating – Whether it's charcoal or gas, we monitor usage in kgs to manage costs.
✅ Mortality Rate – It’s important to note any losses and investigate why.
✅ Sales – Of course, the fun part—counting how many birds we sell! 🐥💰

Without proper records, farming is just guesswork. With them, we see our farm’s progress, make better decisions, and grow smarter!

🚨 Chick Update: 5 Days Old! 🐣 🚨

Our little chicks are growing fast! At just 5 days old, they are active, eating well, and getting stronger every day. Here’s what we’re doing to keep them happy and healthy:

🥣 Feeding: They’re on starter feed, and we go through 1 bag a day! It’s important they always have food available, but we also make sure they get fresh feed daily.

💧 Water: Clean, fresh water is a must! Just like us, chicks need to stay hydrated to stay healthy.

🔥 Warmth: We carefully monitor heat levels using a thermometer, especially at night. We use a combination of gas brooders and charcoal to keep them cozy.

🛏 Bedding: At 3 days old, we removed the newspapers, and now they’re on sawdust bedding—soft, absorbent, and perfect for little feet!

A good start is everything for these chicks, and we’re making sure they have the best care possible. Stay tuned for more updates! 🐥💛

CABBAGE FARMING TIPS

Cabbage is a cool season crop which requires an optimum growth temperatures range of 15- 20° C.

Head formation reduced at temperatures higher than 25 degrees Celsius.

It requires adequate well distributed rainfall. Moisture levels are especially critical during the early stage of the crop growth.

If the levels are low, irrigation should be used to supplement and relive the moisture stress.

Choosing a variety

While making a choice on the variety to produce, a farmer need to consider several key factors among them the maturity duration, yield potential, tolerance and resistance to pests and diseases, good field holding capacity, uniform maturity to ensure a single harvest and preference in the market among other qualities.

Spacing

Plant spacing is important and depends with the variety and the choice of the farmer pegged on the market demands.

Varies with varieties: 60cm x 60cm for large-headed varieties, 60cm x 45cm for medium sized and 30cm x 30cm for small heads

17 LAWS OF FARMING YOU SHOULD KNOW

1. Never target peak seasons, peak seasons come with their own challenges. Be a farmer not a gambler.

2. Choose at least two main crops and a rotational crop plan. Jumping from one crop to another is not right to your pocket.

3. Plan your farm and always have the crops at different age stages, to ensure constant supply.

4. No crop that is not profitable, just master the pro and cons of a particular crop.

5. Having a lot of many is not a licence to successful farming.

6. Have a spray and fertilizer plan and stick to it.

7. Never take advise from agrovets and agrochemical sales agent. Most of them are sales persons and not agronomists.

8.Try as much as possible to cut down on farm expenditure without compromising on produce quality.

9. Never hold back on a produce, if its a quick perishable product. Sell it at the prevailing prices.

11. Never entrust your million dollar idea against a farmhand, ensure you are present during critical stages of crop development untill marketing.

12. Never employ a close family member to manage your farm, most of them will fail you.
