Selection of fish species for culture.
In general, fish species are selected on the basis of fast growth so as to bring returns within a reasonable time. Furthermore, before choosing species for culture, a number of things have to be considered to help the farmers develop the confidence in the choice they are about to make. Farmers might be very disappointed if they chose a fish species just because they saw it perform better elsewhere. The following steps and considerations will be very helpful:
 Consumer preference
 Availability of the possible and preferred inputs
 Any questions or concerns about the species.
 Availability or the source of the species Seed or breeding stock
