FARMERS AS ENTREPRENEURS

Can small-scale farmers become entrepreneurs? Yes. Small-scale farmers all over the world have shown are remarkable ability to adapt. They look for better ways to organise their farms. They try new crops and cultivars, better animals, and alternative technologies to increase productivity, diversify production, reduce risk – and to increase profits. They have become more market-oriented and have learned to take calculated risks to
open or create new markets for their products. Many small-scale farmers have many of the qualities of an entrepreneur.

For small-scale farmers to become entrepreneurs they need all of these qualities and more. They need
to be innovative and forward-looking. They need to manage their businesses as long-term ventures with a
view to making them sustainable. They need to be able to identify opportunities and seize them.

Some small-scale farmers do have these qualities, but they still focus on maintaining their traditional way of
life. Their production decisions are based on what they need -- not on what is possible.

The farmer-entrepreneur produces a clear picture in his mind of what is possible and the future he wants. He knows that what is possible is determined by the market. The farmer-entrepreneur is always looking for new opportunities. He knows that new opportunities are found in the market. The farmer-entrepreneur wants
to make profits. He knows that profits are made in the market.
An entrepreneurial farmer has the initiative, drive, capacity and ability to take advantage of opportunities.

Maize s**t

🔷Maize s**t is a fungal disease that affects maize plants.

🔷It's caused by a fungus called Ustilago maydis.

🔷This fungus forms large, swollen, black, or grey galls on the ears, tassels, and other parts of the maize plant.

🔷When a maize plant is affected by s**t, you'll notice the formation of large, swollen galls or tumours on various parts of the plant.

🔷These galls can appear black, grey, or even whitish in colour.

🔷 They can develop on the ears, tassels, stalks, and sometimes even on the leaves.Inside these galls, you'll find masses of powdery spores that are dark brown to black.

🔷These spores can easily spread to other plants and contribute to the spread of the disease.

Preventive Measures

-Plant tolerant varieties.
-Avoid damage to the crops during cultivation practices.
-Prevent damage by insects and other pests.
-Make sure to keep correct spacing between plants.
- Monitor, collect, and destroy galls before dark fungal spores are released.

🔷Always consider an integrated approach with preventive measures together with possible biological treatments.

🔷 Foliar applications of Fungicides do not reduce the incidence of common s**t infections in Maize.

Prevention is better than cure

Note: Corn s**t can pass through the digestive tracts of animals and is often spread while using manures.

🔷They can remain viable in the soil for several years.

🔷 Spores spreads onto the plants with wind, soil dust and rain splashes.

GINGER PRODUCTION

Copied

GINGER FARMING HAS FOR MANY YEARS BEEN A REGULARISED FORM OF FARMING IN SOME AFRICAN COUNTRIES BECAUSE OF ITS ECONOMIC REWARD,EXPORT RATE AND VARIOUS OTHER BENEFITS..

QUICK THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT GINGER..

1.Ginger is planted using RHIZOMES (it doesn't produce true seed that can be used for planting)
2. It does well in well drained fertile loam soil..
3.water availability is necessary.
4.you need 1500 kgs of ginger seedlings to grow a Hector and the potential yield is 18 to 40 tones per Hector.
5. Ginger takes 8 - 9 months to be ready for harvest( it requires patient farmers to yield good results)
6.you can grow ginger organically ( using compost manure..no fertlizer)
7.GINGER has a ready market because it is used as a spice in many area,as a herb for some remedies,it is used in production of things like drinks, smoothies,GINGER TEA e.t.c
8.Ginger is easy to grow and manage and does very well in some parts of Africa
9.the profit margin is good because you produce Alot of tones per Hector compared to other crops. E.G the farm gate price can be 1 USD to 4 USD per kg so one Hector produces a minimum of 18 tones(18,000 kgs) so 18000 x 1 USD = 18,000 usd.. anyway that for the next lesson.
10. you need irrigation to grow ginger of course you can grow it under rain fed but you need a back up irrigation system for you to use once the rain has stopped... remember I said ginger takes 9 months..

N:B there are two main varieties of ginger which is commonly grown,
1.the Rand race
2.hybrid
it is good to buy seedlings from trusted suppliers because organically grow ginger is good for SEED..some ginger is treated with chemicals as a result they rot they don't germinate,,do not plant freshly harvested ginger...

*THE DOS AND DON'TS IN POULTRY FARMING?*

📝Allow good air circulation in the laying house. All the ammonia, carbon dioxide and dust will accumulate there and this is disastrous to your birds.Respiratory problems will always lurk in the poultry house.

📝A hybrid layer needs on average 130 gm-140gms of feed per day.An Indigenous chicken can feed on 110 to 120gms of feed per day.Dont Overfeed or Underfeed your birds

📝Distribute feed troughs and water troughs evenly (1 drinker for 50 birds.Likewise for trough feeders)

📝Provide layer's mash at around 20 weeks when you get 10-20% egg production and introduce it gradually to avoid stressing the birds.

📝Laying nests must be kept in dark places and eggs collected 3 times a day.Failure to collect eggs on time will lead to broodiness and egg eating.

📝Allow a nest with 4 hens each.Don't let your birds lay on the floor as this leads to dirty eggs.

📝Provide soft clean litter,Wood shavings and rice husks is most suitable.

📝Store eggs with small end down to allow them to 'breathe'.

📝Clean dirty eggs with steel wool/coarse leaves (never wash them).Don't touch eggs with dirty hands as this leads to contamination.

📝Debeaking at 12 to 14 weeks is most suitable.

📝Culling when egg
production drops below 40% is recomnended. This is at 72 to 80 weeks.

📝Don’t overcrowd brooders .A spacing of 4 metres diameter for 500 birds is most suitable.

📝Feed must be of good quality.Always test your feeds in a laboratory to ensure its quality.

📑Give clean water ad-lib(usiwapimie).Birds drink twice as much as they eat.

📝Don’t mix young and older birds.Younger birds have lower immunity than older ones and diseases would spread quickly.Another thing is that older birds would fight the younger ones.

📝Cleaning the poultry house is of utmost importance.

📝Dispose of dead birds quickly and isolate sick ones.Never consume sick birds.

📝Provide disinfectant at the entrance to the chicken house

📝Antibiotics should never

17 LAWS OF FARMING YOU SHOULD KNOW

1. Never target peak seasons, peak seasons come with their own challenges. Be a farmer not a gambler.

2. Choose at least two main crops and a rotational crop plan. Jumping from one crop to another is not right to your pocket.

3. Plan your farm and always have the crops at different age stages, to ensure constant supply.

4. No crop that is not profitable, just master the pro and cons of a particular crop.

5. Having a lot of many is not a licence to successful farming.

6. Have a spray and fertilizer plan and stick to it.

7. Be cautious when taking advise from agrovets and agrochemical sales agent. Most of them are sales persons and not agronomists.

8.Try as much as possible to cut down on farm expenditure without compromising on produce quality.

9. Never hold back on a produce, if its a quick perishable product. Sell it at the prevailing prices.

10. Never plant a new seed on large scale before doing trials unless you have seen it somewhere.

11. Never entrust your million dollar idea against a farmhand, ensure you are present during critical stages of crop development untill marketing.

12. Never employ a close family member to manage your farm, most of them will fail you.

13. *If you are neighbouring farmers plant same crop*.

14. Never apply any farming information you get online, without consulting your agronomist.

15. Always have a farm plan.

16. Old is always good.
Most of the old seed varieties and chemicals will never disappoint you.

17. Passion in farming is key and will take you far.

*THE USE OF LIQUID PARAFFIN FOR ALL KIND OF BABY CHICKS*

After hatching, chicks take longer time for them to start feeding on their own. Thus, poultry farmers are encouraged to give chicks liquid paraffin.

Here are the benefits of giving liquid paraffin to day old chicks;

1. It increases chicks' appetite in the process.

2. The highly refined liquid helps to lubricate the food pathway.

3. It helps to increase the chances of survival of the chicks.

4. It helps in clearing the throat in preparation for feed ingestion. This is through softening the throat as the oil is fine and smooth.

5. As the oil moves down the digestive system, it clears the gut and pushes any particles downwards.

6. It helps to reduce chances of constipation.

How liquid paraffin is administered

The oil is poured on drinking water (preferably warm water). Water is denser than oil, the oil will form a layer, which makes it easier for chicks to pick it as they drink.

The liquid paraffin can also be used to get rid of pests which stick on Chicken skin, especially on the feet and around the eyes.

For better results, it should be mixed with glucose and chick formula as well as vaccination.

The liquid can be found in supermarkets, cosmetic shops and Chemist shop.

*INDETERMINATE TOMATOPRODUCTION* *TIPS:*

📗Indeterminate Tomatoes will continue to grow and produce fruits until they are killed of by frost.

Here are a few Tips to help you maintain a good Crop:

📗Trellis/ Support the plants well
• They will grow very tall and will get heavier as their life cycle progresses. Adequate support is required to keep them upright and free from soil pests and disease

📗Put Fertility trenches in place
• Tomatoes are heavy feeders and will require adequate nutrition to ensure they produce to their maximum capacity

📗Water well and deeply
• The roots will go a long way down. Make sure to water the plants well to ensure they are always well hydrated especially during the fruit setting stage

📗 Remove lower suckers but *do not over prune*
• You can pinch out the side suckers that form between the main stem and the branches at the bottom of the stem. This helps to reduce fungus problems

📗Plant deeply
• Transplant your tomato seedlings deeply up to the lowest leaves. This is because Tomatoes produce roots along their stems and this practice helps them to develop stronger and sturdier roots to support the plant

*NATURAL REMEDIES FOR CHICKENS:*

🟩 Black Pepper
Black pepper contains a lot of vitamins and nutrients. It also functions as an anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant.
In addition, it helps flush toxins and absorb nutrients from its food sources. Chickens are prone to respiratory problems.
Adding a few pinches of black pepper to their feed or in their water can help prevent respiratory problems and ease coughing.

🟩 Cayenne Pepper
For many years, farmers normally add pepper to chicken and duck feed or water to boost egg production.
Worm diseases are known to hamper the flock’s ability to reproduce in which cayenne pepper is a very effective remedy.
Cayenne pepper burns parasites that make their way into the digestive system.
Simply add half a teaspoon of cayenne pepper to your chicken feed as a natural way to deworm them.

🟩Oregano
The essential oil of Oregano is a natural antibiotic.
Oregano can be given to ducks and chickens in the form of an essential oil, fresh or dried.
It can help prevent coccidiosis, blackhead, E.coli, avian flu, and bronchitis.
You can add dried oregano to feed or water or simply sprinkle them in the brooder or coop as a free choice snack.
Add extra oregano to the diet of laying hens to give them an added immune system booster.

🟩Cinnamon
Cinnamon reduces inflammation and boasts of anti-infectious, antibacterial and antioxidant properties as well.
It also aids in the prevention of neurological disease.
A compound in the spice helps enhance blood flow to the feet, wattles, and combs to ward off frostbite.
It also may help with the prevention of congestion, coughing, infection, and respiratory problems.
