INITIATING GOAT FARMING FOR NOVICES: A PHASED APPROACH

Embarking on goat farming does not necessitate substantial capital outlay. Initiating operations with a modest herd of 2–5 goats enables gradual growth. The following guidelines facilitate a seamless commencement:

1. Initial Phase
~ Select robust, disease-resistant breeds such as Red Sokoto, Boer, or West African Dwarf.
~ Provide simple, well-ventilated housing with protection from precipitation and predators.
~ Offer a diverse diet comprising grasses, crop residues, kitchen waste, and mineral supplements.

2. Continuous Learning and Improvement
~ Monitor health, administer regular deworming, and vaccinations.
~ Observe daily behavioral patterns to facilitate early disease detection.

3. Strategic Reinvestment and Expansion
~ Reinvest profits generated from the sale of milk, meat, or kids in upgraded housing, nutrition, and additional goats.

4. Mitigating Risk, Ensuring Steady Growth
~ Goats exhibit rapid reproduction and adaptability to diverse environments, rendering them ideal for novice farmers pursuing gradual expansion.

Through diligence and optimal care, a modest inception can evolve into substantial success.

Soya bean Production Guide per Hectare

Seed Requirements
👉About 100kgs of seed per hectare, to achieve a plant population of 300 000 - 450 000 plants per hectare

Yield
👉2 - 4 tonnes per hectare, Higher yields can be achieved with Good Agronomic Practices (GAPS). It is highly recommended that seed should be innoculated with Rhizobium bacteria at planting

Soil pH
👉 Very sensitive to soil acidity, and for maximum yields the pH must be at least 5.5

Spacing
👉45-50cm
👉Do not plant seed deeper than 5 cm

Fertilization
👉A general recommendation is to apply a pre-plant application of 200 to 300 kg per ha of either a basal fertiliser Gypsum or Single Super Phosphate
Pests and Diseases
👉Grasses- Alachlor/Laso 3 - 4lt per hectare. Pre-emergent to both the w**d and the crop. Galant Super 0.6 - 2.4lt per hectare. Post emergent to annual and perrenial grasses
👉Mainly B/L W**ds- Metribuzin 48 EC, 0.6 - 1.0L per hectare. Pre - emergent to both the w**d and crop. Pursuit/Imazethapyr 700 mls per hectare. Post emergent to grasses and B/L w**ds, supression of sedges
👉Cutworms- Lambda Cyalothrin 200mls per hectare . Apply as a band spray at planting or over row after germination
👉Aphids only- Dimethoate 800 - 1000 mls per hectare. Apply as a full cover spray, repeat as necessary
👉Boll worms, Caterpillars, Semi Loopers, Snout Beetle- Carbaryl 85, 750 grams per hectare. Apply as a full cover spray, repeat as necessary. Decis forte 125mls per hectare. Repeat as necessary after flowering
👉Frog eye - Tebuconazole 500mls per hectare. Apply at the onset of disease infection, repeat as necessary
Soya bean Rust- Propiconazole/Tilt 500mls per hectare. Apply at 50, 70 & 90 days after planting

To grow beetroot from seed, sow directly into the soil or start them indoors in modular trays and transplant later. Beetroot prefers a cool, moist environment, so ensure the soil is well-drained and amend it with compost. Direct sow in shallow drills from mid-April to late June, spacing seeds 10cm apart and rows 30cm apart. For an early crop, sow under cloches or horticultural fleece.
Here's a more detailed guide:
1. Timing:
Direct sowing: Sow seeds directly in the soil from mid-April to late June.
Early crop: To get an early harvest, sow under cloches or horticultural fleece from early March.
Modular trays: You can also sow beetroot in modular trays indoors.
2. Soil Preparation:
Well-drained soil: Beetroot thrives in well-drained soil.
Amend with compost: Incorporate plenty of compost into the soil to improve its structure and fertility.
3. Sowing Methods:
Direct sowing:
Create shallow drills (about 1cm deep) and space seeds 10cm apart.
Space rows 30cm apart.
Thin seedlings to 10-15cm spacing once they are established.
Modular trays:
Use a good-quality compost like John Innes No. 2.
Sow seeds in small plug trays, putting 3 or 4 seeds in each plug.
Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are large enough.
4. Watering and Care:
Moist but not wet: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy, especially during germination.
W**d control: Remove w**ds regularly to prevent competition with the beetroot.
Thinning: If you direct sow, thin seedlings to the desired spacing (10-15cm apart).
Protect from pests: Protect young seedlings from slugs and snails.
5. Harvesting:
Harvest at any size: You can harvest beetroot at various sizes.
Leave them to grow: For larger beets, allow them to grow for 10-12 weeks.

Grow Your Own Cauliflower Heads
I love to think of vegetable plants as falling into nice, tidy categories like leaves, roots, and fruit. But then I come across oddballs like broccoli and cauliflower. We don't grow these plants for their leaves (though they are edible and full of nutrients!), their roots, or their fruit.

We actually grow them for their unopened flower heads. That's right. The part of a cauliflower plant that we eat is something called an inflorescence, or a collection of tiny flowers. If you grow your cauliflower plant long enough, each of those tiny white buds will open up into a beautiful yellow flower. The goal, of course, is typically to harvest the head, also called the "curd", before all those flowers open up.

Cauliflower is in the Brassicaceae family, making it cousins with kale, cabbage, mustard greens, arugula, and radishes. I typically find cauliflower much trickier to grow than the rest of the family. It's really the odd-man out again. So follow this guide to find success when growing cauliflower at home.
