Have you heard of that nyanja saying that says: "Ndrama zingena nzelu zichoka"
In English it basically means you have good ideas when you are broke, but immediately the money comes the ideas leave.
So if you've raised up some money as your business capital and reading this, you might be in this situation.
You have the money to start a business but you don't know what business to start.
It's not that you don't have any ideas. You have ideas, but you just don't know what the right business is.
You might be afraid of loosing the money you've worked so hard for in a business that's not even profitable.
I clearly understand that fear. Because I was in the exact situation some few years ago.
But here's a few checklist that can help you to choose a right business idea for you that you can be sure that you will not loose your hard earned money.
1. How many people want it?
No matter how smart or business minded you are, if you start a business that sells something no one wants, there's no witchcraft or business training that can help you.
So before you start a business make sure the product/service you want to start selling is actually something people already want. PERIOD!
The more people want it the better.
2. How much do I have to spend?
Listen to this very carefully: when wanting to start a new business Don't only ask for the possible profit but also ask for the expenses involved.
Let tell you a short story.
There was a woman in our neighborhood we called amake Beauty.
She had a friend who was selling charcoal. Every time the friend used to encourage amake Beauty to also start the charcoal business.
She told her that it was a very profitable business. She added to say that if you want to gain more customers you have to sell your charcoal very cheap, it will attract more customers.
Without hesitation amake Beauty invested money in the charcoal business. She went all in. But to her surprise the business was a mess. She couldn't understand how she was making loss after loss, while her friend kept on making
profits..
And what bothered her even more was the fact that they both got the charcoal from the same suppliers and they both were selling at the same price and same quantity. But amake Beauty still made losses.
What she didn't realize was that her friend had a brother who is a truck driver who used to Bring the charcoal to her free of charge. While amake Beauty used to spend K150 on each bag in delivery costs to get to her house.
So amake Beauty made a loss in her business because she didn't fully understand the full costs/expenses of the business which made her to loose the money she started with.
Okay listen, this story is not real, but the lessons are very clear.
Don't start a business you Don't fully understand the expenses. Don't just ask how much you will be Making but also ask how much you need to spend.
3. Will it grow?
Imagine having a child who never grows.
Yeah that wouldn't be so good right? It's the same with business.
You have to start something that can later grow. So before you start something think of how you can later grow it.
4. What if it does not work?
Listen, business is a 50-50 chance. You either make it or fail.
And more often than not it fails(sad truth)
So in a case that your new business fails, how will you exit that business.
You have to find a way of stopping that business but still recoup your Starting capital.
If your business fails, it shouldn't mean that you've also lost your capital!
Your business has to safely keep your starting capital so that incase the business goes down, your money is still safe.
