*Government disputes European Parliament Resolution on Zambia’s Post-Election Situation*
The Zambian Government has disputed the European Parliament’s resolution on the country’s post-election situation, describing it as premature and expressing concern that it was adopted without prior engagement with Government and before the publication of the EU Election Observation Mission’s final report. The European Parliament adopted the resolution on September 17, 2026.
In a statement issued by Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Mulambo Haimbe, Government said serious determinations concerning Zambia should be based on verified facts and engagement with the Zambian authorities. It has therefore requested a formal partnership dialogue with the European Commission and the European External Action Service.
On the death of Mutotwe Kafwaya, Government said the circumstances surrounding his death on August 14 remain under investigation by the Zambia Police Service, with oversight from the Zambia Human Rights Commission. Government also rejected allegations of a policy of extrajudicial action.
Regarding treason cases and alleged arbitrary detentions, Government maintained that the Judiciary is independent and that all accused persons are entitled to due process, legal representation and a fair trial. It also disputed figures cited in the EU resolution concerning detentions and said all arrests were carried out in accordance with Zambian law.
Government further said it remains committed to its strategic partnership with the EU, including cooperation in trade, investment, development and critical raw materials, while calling for continued engagement through established diplomatic channels.
