Most of you saw our YouTube Video and gave us valuable feedback. We are grateful. 🙏
You saw our Journey, you were impressed.... But here is the question; Why are many Goat Farmers Still struggling?
And No One Wants to Talk About It!
Goat farming is often praised as cheap and profitable… but the reality on many farms tells a different story. The problem isn’t the goats it’s the approach.
Here are the hard truths every serious farmer must understand:
1. Goats Are a Business, Not Pets, not a hobby.
Feeding anyhow, housing anyhow, and managing casually will only give you casual results.
Profitable goat farming requires planning, proper housing, and consistent care. You need to harness the small stock success program.
2. Breed Quality Determines Profit
Relying only on slow-growing local breeds limits your income. Introducing improved or crossbreeds can significantly boost growth rate and reproduction, leading to better returns.
The big Kalahari Red Buck in this video is "Buggy" a fantastic and very Expensive Buck owned by Sirocco Kalahari Reds of Namibia. As a business we took the deliberate decision to buy his offspring. We have 11 Bucks directly sired by Buggy in our herd representing a massive investment in genetics. This is our model for future profitability. Cheap is expensive
3. Poor Management Is the Real Killer
Goats don’t die from superstition they die from preventable issues like worm infestation, diseases (like PPR), clostridial diseases, dirty environments, and lack of vaccination. Good hygiene and health care are non-negotiable.
As a business we spend thousands annually buying Vaccines to vaccinate or herds. Another huge investment in herd health. Future profits heavily depend on healthy herds.
4. Free-Range Isn’t a Business Model
Allowing goats to roam freely may reduce feeding costs, but it also reduces productivity, exposes them to diseases, and limits proper monitoring. We run small camps for our herds and all super genetics are monitored 24/7 right here in Lusaka not in Lufwanyama whilst you sip gin and juice at your local pub and grill in another town. You will cry.
5. No Records = No Progress
If you’re not tracking births, weights, treatments, and expenses, you’re running blind. Simple record-keeping helps you identify what’s working and where to improve. We run MyGoatFarm app by of Kenya. We pay $90 per year and that's a small investment for such a brilliant farm management app.
Successful goat farmers don’t just “rear goats” they manage a system. That’s why some turn 10 goats into a thriving business, while others remain stuck for years.
And lastly, Kasumbalesa market will drain you and kick you out of business. A lot of Nonsense starts from there. Leave it to the villagers. That's their market.
