Argentine President Javier Milei attacked the UN in a speech to the world body on Wednesday, calling it a “useless organisation” filled with “arrogant parasites.”

The firebrand Milei, one of US President Donald Trump’s closest Latin American allies, has repeatedly used the UN platform to criticize global governance and its “woke” agenda.

He accused the United Nations on Wednesday of having failed in its duty to guarantee collective security and human rights, saying it had instead allowed “chaos, violence and international terrorism” to flourish.

Africa is bigger than the world map has taught many of us to imagine.

Covering roughly 30.3 million km², Africa is almost exactly the same size as Russia, the United States and India combined. Together, the three countries span about 30.2 million km² — more than 99.5% of Africa’s total area. The remaining difference is only around 146,000 km², roughly the size of Nepal.

Yet an almost identical amount of territory contains very different numbers of people. In 2026, Russia, the U.S. and India together account for roughly 1.97 billion people, compared with an estimated 1.58 billion across Africa. That means the three countries have around 384 million more inhabitants despite occupying virtually the same area.

The comparison also exposes a familiar problem in how we visualize the planet. The Mercator projection, still one of the world’s most recognizable map formats, increasingly exaggerates landmass size toward the poles. As a result, northern territories such as Russia and Greenland appear much larger relative to equatorial Africa than they really are. Africa is actually around 14 times larger than Greenland, despite the two appearing comparable on many Mercator maps.

That debate has taken on new significance. On September 4, 2026, the UN General Assembly backed a resolution encouraging wider use of the Equal Earth projection, designed to represent the relative area of continents more accurately.

Africa is not only the world’s second-largest continent. It accounts for roughly one-fifth of Earth’s land surface — a scale conventional maps have often made surprisingly difficult to see.

🔴In 1960, when Patrice Lumumba 🇨🇩 was under house arrest, Egypt 🇪🇬 was the only country to offer asylum to his family while they were being hunted by Mobutu’s forces. Three of his young children (François, Patrice Jr., and Juliana) were smuggled out of Leopoldville using Egyptian diplomatic cover, fake passports, and UN-linked Egyptian personnel. They were taken to Cairo and raised in the household of Egyptian diplomat Mohamed Abdel Aziz Ishak under the protection of President Gamal Abdel Nasser.

Nasser later sent a plane to rescue Lumumba’s widow Pauline Opango Lumumba and their remaining children.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has sparked a conversation about African identity, religion and the influence of foreign cultures.

Museveni said Africans sometimes develop an “inferiority complex,” arguing that some Christians associate Christianity with European identity, while some Muslims associate Islam with Arab identity.

His remarks highlight a broader debate about how religion can sometimes become intertwined with cultural identity.

Being Christian does not make an African European, just as being Muslim does not make an African Arab. For many, the conversation is ultimately about preserving African identity while embracing religious beliefs.

🇰🇪 Former Catholic priest Father Sandro Ferretto has left priesthood to marry Sharon Jepng’ok, a Tugen woman from Baringo South, Kenya.

Sandro, who is Italian-born, previously served as a parish priest in the Kasiela and Mochongoi areas of Baringo before leaving the priesthood to pursue a relationship and start a family.

The couple recently formalised their union through a traditional Koito ceremony in Seretion Village, Kasiela, with Sandro embracing Tugen culture and traditions during the celebration.

The name Pedro Camejo might not be so popular in history books or around the world but in Venezuelan history and to the large black community in Venezuela, he is a celebrated figure whose presence as a soldier in the War of Independence moved the nation closer to becoming free.

Pedro Camejo, who is called the First Black as a sign of reverence and respect in Venezuela, is often depicted wearing a soldier’s uniform; a bright red and yellow soldier’s suit that closely resembles the Spanish flag. Spain ruled Venezuela until they fought for and gained their full independence.

Born enslaved in 1790, Pedro grew up in the city of San Juan de Payara in the Venezuelan state of Apure. He belonged to Vicente Alonzo, a Spanish nobleman who was related to the Spanish royal family. There are no indications of how Pedro worked for Vicente but perhaps it is right to assume that he worked as a domestic slave for the royal as several enslaved black people who found themselves linked to royals did.

Black history did not begin with slavery.

Long before the transatlantic slave trade, Africa was home to some of the world's oldest civilizations, thriving kingdoms, centers of learning, and global trade networks. From the pyramids of ancient Egypt and Nubia to the universities of Timbuktu, from the Kingdom of Kush to Great Zimbabwe, from the empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai to the Kingdom of Benin and the Ethiopian Empire, African societies made remarkable contributions to mathematics, astronomy, architecture, medicine, metallurgy, literature, agriculture, and commerce.

Yet for many people, Black history is introduced only through the lens of enslavement. While slavery is an essential part of history that must never be ignored, it represents only one chapter in a much longer story.

Africa is the birthplace of humanity. Archaeological discoveries continue to show that the earliest known human ancestors lived on the African continent hundreds of thousands of years before civilizations emerged elsewhere. That alone makes Africa central to the story of every person on Earth.

For thousands of years, African merchants crossed the Sahara, sailed the Indian Ocean, and traded with Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Cities like Timbuktu, Gao, and Djenné became renowned for scholarship, attracting students and scholars from across the Islamic world. Libraries filled with manuscripts on law, science, mathematics, philosophy, and astronomy remind us that knowledge flourished across the continent centuries before colonialism.

African kingdoms also developed sophisticated systems of governance. Some maintained standing armies, established diplomatic relations with neighboring states, minted currencies, and built monumental architecture that still amazes historians today. Leaders such as Mansa Musa, Amanirenas, Queen Nzinga, Yaa Asantewaa, Shaka Zulu, and Menelik II shaped history far beyond their own borders.
