As the sun goes down, the work isn’t over.

Patrick is counting the cows before nightfall, making sure every animal is accounted for. People often ask why we don’t keep them locked in a small pen overnight. The answer is simple: cattle naturally graze during the cooler hours of the evening and at night, especially in our climate.

Giving them enough space to move and graze reduces stress, supports better rumen function, and helps keep them healthy and productive. Good cattle management means working with the animals’ natural behavior, not against it.

Every evening count is another step in ensuring the herd is safe, healthy, and ready for the next day.

Our new Boran cleanup bulls have arrived.

These registered pedigree bulls from Lwimba Ranch Santa Gertrudis Stud will be used with cows and heifers that do not conceive through embryo transfer or artificial insemination. This ensures every breeding female has the opportunity to produce a calf while maintaining a defined breeding season.

Boran cattle are well known for their fertility, adaptability, hardiness, and ability to perform under African conditions, making them an excellent complement to our breeding program.

Our goal is simple: maximize pregnancy rates while continuing to build a productive and efficient herd.

The cattle are making excellent use of the maize stover after harvest. What could be considered crop residue is being converted into beef through good management.

In this video, Patrick Makungu explains the protein lick we are feeding and why it is so important. The extra protein helps the rumen microbes work more efficiently, allowing the cattle to digest the maize stover better, increase feed intake, and maintain steady weight gain during the dry season.

Good nutrition is not just about feeding more—it’s about helping the animal get more value from every mouthful.

Sunday Morning Cattle Walk 🐄🌅

Sunday mornings are a good time to walk through the herd and see the progress.

It is rewarding to see how much these cows have improved. Back in January, many of them were little more than skin and bones. With better nutrition, careful management, and consistent care, they are now in much better body condition.

Our focus now is preparing them for the embryo transfer programme this October, when they will receive elite Nelore embryos. Healthy recipient cows are the foundation of a successful ET programme.

Step by step, we are building the future of Nelore genetics in Zambia.

Maize stover is often underestimated, but with the right management it can become a valuable feed resource during the dry season.

These cows are grazing maize stover behind portable electric fencing, allowing us to control grazing, reduce waste, and improve utilization. Combined with a protein lick, this helps maintain rumen function, increases feed intake, and makes better use of the available roughage.

Simple management changes can significantly improve cattle performance while lowering feeding costs.

Girolando Cattle for African Dairy Farming

Botswana is importing Girolando cows from Brazil. Girolando cattle are a cross between Gir and Holstein Friesian, combining milk production with better heat tolerance and adaptation to harsh environments.

However, genetics alone are not enough. For good milk production, they still need proper feeding, water, health care and management.

Botswana’s government has begun the phased importation of at least 1 000 Girolando cattle from Brazil, with the intention of reducing

Millet for hay🌾🌾🐮

Today (16/07), our millet has started to germinate. If everything goes as planned, we’ll harvest it for hay in late September to feed our cattle.

Millet harvested at the correct stage produces highly nutritious hay, with excellent digestibility and good protein levels, helping maintain cow condition and performance through the dry season.

Producing quality forage on the farm is one of the best investments in healthier, more productive cattle.
