Sub-national governments are becoming key drivers of agroecological transitions 👩‍🌾

Over the past decade, we’ve seen a significant rise in local, national, and regional strategies, policies, and legislation supporting agroecology.

⚠️But a policy document alone doesn’t transform a food system.

Agroecology is ultimately implemented locally: it’s on farms, across landscapes, and in municipalities and regions where farmers produce food, regenerate ecosystems, and turn policies into action.

Sub-national governments, closer to local realities, are critical actors in turning national ambitions into tangible outcomes.

📕Our latest brief (by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Agroecology Coalition, Biovision Foundation, Persimmon Co Lab, Himalayan Agroecology Initiative) explores how sub-national governments are becoming key drivers of agroecological transitions by:

🌱Creating enabling environments for agroecology
🌱Supporting farmers and local actors
🌱Connecting national strategies with local implementation
🌱Building policies and institutions that reflect local realities.

The brief is the result of a “Deep Dive meeting” organized by the Implementation and Policies Working Group of the Agroecology Coalition, bringing together experiences and lessons on the role of sub-national governance in advancing agroecology.
