Let's talk about male calves;

Male calves are often undervalued by emerging farmers, however, they can represent significant economic opportunities when managed strategically.

In stud breeding operations, male calves are highly valuable, where bred bulls can be sold at premium prices to both stud and commercial breeders. Stud breeders supply genetics.

In commercial purebred systems, a well-raised male calf can serve as a cost-effective breeding bull for farmers who cannot afford stud-quality bulls.

In crossbreeding programs, male calves can be raised and sold as steers, with the proceeds reinvested into acquiring quality heifers to strengthen the herd.

Animal nutrition is very important. It ensures the production of quality breeding animals and quality feed lot animals. Giving cows the required nutrition can be a huge cost that can slowly strain the business. This is something we then decided to do, to ensure our herd's nutritional needs are met.

Today we did a small experiment with this group of cows. We sprayed salt solution on the grass (salt x water). It was a simple moderate spray, not too much. This is an old practice that still works. Cows will eat more mouths per minute because of that extra motivation. This can be done with molasses as well on dry grass to improve feed uptake. Cheap but very effective. See what happened...
