Diaries of an African farmer.
I promise to give my thoughts on the Zim farmer who bought a Boran bull for R8m(US$444 000).

The farmer is a Boran stud(pure/pedigree) breeder. A stud breeder breeds pure breeds and the animals have to conform to the prescribe breed standard.

The debate on most people was is it justified and viable to buy a bull for such an amount. Let's do the Maths.
A stud breeder sell his/her animals to other stud breeders or commercial cattle breeders.
On the recently held Zimbabwe National Herdbook annual sale the most expensive bull fetched US$7000. 444 000÷7000=63.4
So the 444k bull farmer need to sell more than 64 bull offsprings from his expensive bull. Remember this is assuming that his bull produces 64 top selling bulls(which I have doubts).
How many breeders can afford to buy a bull for US$7000? They're very few and likely to be stud/pedigree breeders. The average price of pedigree bulls is usually around $3000.
Commercial cattle breeders wouldn't buy bulls above US$3000(R53000). If a bull is over $3k it does not make any economic sense for a commercial cattle breeder. Simple ratio I use to determine the price of a bull for my herd is 1:4, meaning I should sell 4 heifers or steers to buy a breeding bull.

Remember there are more commercial cattle than stud breeders thus the former are the target market for any stud/pedigree breeder.

Don't be misled by people who were saying he will sell sermen. Breeders don't make by selling sermen but from selling live animals especially bulls. Pedigree heifers or cows don't fetch as much as bulls. Sermen selling is a side hustle.
