How to Store Fertilized Eggs for Hatching

To maximize hatchability, follow these evidence-based steps, combining insights from poultry experts and scientific studies:

1. Optimal Storage Conditions

▶️ Temperature: Maintain 50–55°F (10–13°C). Avoid extremes:
▶️ Above 72°F (22°C) risks premature embryo development .
▶️ Below 40°F (4°C) can kill embryos .
▶️ Humidity: Aim for 70–80% to prevent moisture loss without condensation .

2. Positioning Eggs Correctly

▶️ Large End Up: Prevents the air cell from dislodging and ensures proper chick orientation during hatching .
▶️ Alternative: Lay eggs on their side (like a broody hen) for short-term storage .

3. Daily Turning

▶️ Frequency: Turn eggs 2–5 times daily to prevent embryo adhesion to the shell .
- Method:
▶️ Tilt eggs 30–45° (use blocks under storage trays).
▶️ Rotate 180° if stored on their side .

4. Hygiene & Handling

▶️ Clean Storage: Use sterilized containers (avoid reused cardboard). Plastic bins washed with mild bleach (1 tsp per liter of water) are ideal .
▶️ Avoid Washing: Eggs lose protective bloom; gently buff dirt with sandpaper instead .
▶️ Wash Hands: Prevent bacterial transfer when handling .

5. Storage Duration

▶️ Ideal: 3–7 days. Hatchability drops 0.5–1.5% daily after day 7 .
▶️ Maximum: 14 days (only in near-perfect conditions) .

6. Pre-Incubation Prep

▶️ Rest Shipped Eggs: Let them settle 12–24 hours .
▶️ Gradual Warming: Bring eggs to room temperature (70°F) for 6–12 hours before incubating .

Pro Tip: Label eggs with dates and turning positions (e.g., AM/PM) to track rotations. Discard cracked or misshapen eggs to avoid contamination .

By mimicking a broody hen’s natural behavior, you’ll preserve fertility and boost your hatch success rate!
