IMPACTED CROP IN CHICKENS
When feed gets stuck in the crop

WHAT IS IT?
The crop is a pouch at the base of the neck where chickens store feed temporarily.
Impacted crop happens when this pouch becomes blocked and the feed does not move into the stomach. When you feel it, it will feel hard and full.

5 WARNING SIGNS TO WATCH FOR:
1. Crop is hard and full in the morning after the bird has not eaten overnight
2. Loss of appetite
3. Weight loss
4. Weakness
5. Difficulty swallowing or bad breath

TOP 5 CAUSES:
1. Eating too much long grass or fibrous material
2. Swallowing string, plastic, or other foreign objects
3. Poor quality or very fibrous feed
4. Not enough access to clean water
5. Free-range birds picking up trash and debris

YOUR 3-STEP ACTION PLAN:
Step 1: Isolate the bird so you can monitor it easily
Step 2: Provide only clean, fresh water. Withhold feed for now
Step 3: Contact a veterinarian if the crop is still full the next morning or if the bird is weak

4 THINGS YOU SHOULD NEVER DO:
1. Do not squeeze the crop to force contents out
2. Do not turn the bird upside down to make it vomit
3. Do not pour oil or chemicals into the mouth
4. Do not attempt surgery at home
Forcing regurgitation can cause feed to enter the lungs and lead to aspiration.

PREVENTION TIPS:
- Provide good quality feed
- Ensure constant access to clean water
- Keep the run clean and free of string, plastic and rubbish
- Do a quick crop check every morning before feeding
- Monitor birds that have had crop problems before

IMPORTANT NOTE: IMPACTED CROP VS SOUR CROP
Impacted Crop: Crop feels hard and packed. Feed is not moving.
Sour Crop: Crop feels soft and fluid-filled and may have a sour smell.
Do not use the same treatment for both. Check first.
