FINDING THE RIGHT PUMP FOR YOU
A pump is a mechanical device that transports media by transferring the energy supplied by a motor into hydraulic energy. There are a lot of pumps types and specifications available and knowing which type is suitable for your application is critical to reduce cost and increase the life of your pump and system. With many different kinds of pumps it can be a challenge knowing which one to purchase.
Below are the points to know that will help in choosing the right pump for your application and getting the best value for your purchase.
1. Know the type of pump
There are two basic types of pumps CENTRIFUGAL, POSITIVE DISPLACEMENT. the type of pump required will determined by the direction of flow.
2. The flow rates
Also referred to as the Capacity. This is the measure of the volume capacity of a pump in a given time. It is usually given in liters per second(l/s) and cubic meters per hour(m^3/h). when choosing a pump, the flow rate of the pump must be matched by the flow rate required by the application /system
3. Horsepower
The minimum power required to run the pump to move the medium in a given system, or the power that the pump would require if it were 100% efficient
4. Total head
The sum of the head produced by the pump. It can be calculated by subtracting the suction head from the discharge head.
5. The liquid media
This is the liquid that will be moved by the pump e.g., water, waste water, slurry, oil, coolant fluid or sewage
