🎓 BULL BUYING 101: WHY YOU MUST ALWAYS MEET HIS MOTHER FIRST

When buying a bull, the temptation is to focus on muscle, size, and stance. A broad chest, thick neck, and confident walk can be impressive ,but that’s only half the story.
If you want to make a sound investment, don’t just look at the bull. Ask to see his mother.

Here’s why 👇

🌿 1️⃣ The Mother Tells the Truth
A bull’s mother reveals what no show ring can hide — her fertility, milk production, temperament, and overall constitution. If she’s healthy, fertile, and consistently produces strong calves, chances are her son carries those same genetics.

🐄 2️⃣ Longevity & Maternal Traits
You’re not just buying a bull; you’re buying the future of your herd. Bulls pass on more than muscle — they pass on maternal strength.
A calm, fertile, productive dam means daughters who calve easily and mature quickly. That’s how you build a strong herd from within.

🌾 3️⃣ Temperament is Hereditary
If the mother is aggressive, flighty, or difficult to handle, expect some of that to show up in her offspring. A calm cow often means a calm bull — and calm cattle make management easier and safer.

💪 4️⃣ Performance You Can Trust
Body mass can be influenced by feed and environment, but genetic stability comes from consistent maternal performance.
Ask:
• How many calves has she weaned?
• How long is her calving interval?
• Has she ever had birthing complications?
Those answers determine whether your bull will breed success or problems.

🌍 5️⃣ The Legacy of Good Bloodlines
At Zunde Boran Herd, we believe a bull is only as good as the cow behind him.
A well-chosen bull changes your herd.
A poorly chosen one changes your future.

So next time you’re about to buy a bull, don’t stop at admiring his size — ask for his story. Ask for his mother. Because in cattle, like in life, a strong foundation is everything. In this light, Zunde Boran Herd will be having a year end Sale this December !! Calling to all Farmers .

This morning, we lost one of our calves, Number 39, to a suspected case of January Disease (Theileriosis). It’s never easy to share such moments, but in cattle farming, every challenge comes with a lesson worth passing on.

What is January Disease?
Theileriosis, locally known as January Disease, is a deadly tick-borne illness common in Zimbabwe. It is transmitted by the brown ear tick and often peaks during the rainy season when ticks thrive. Sadly, once symptoms are advanced, recovery chances are very low.

Symptoms to watch for:
• Loss of appetite
• Weakness or reluctance to move
• Swelling around the eyes and face
• Labored breathing or coughing
• Weight loss, even within days

Treatment and Prevention
Treatment can work only if started early—using recommended drugs under veterinary guidance. But the most effective strategy is prevention:
• Regular dipping: Weekly or fortnightly dipping to control tick populations.
• Pasture management: Keeping grass short around kraals and paddocks reduces tick habitats.
• Early detection: Farmers must closely monitor their herd and isolate sick animals immediately.

Our Takeaway
Losing Number 39 reminds us that prevention is everything. We began treatment as soon as symptoms showed, but sometimes, even with our best efforts, it’s already too late. This highlights the importance of awareness, vigilance, and proactive animal health management.

As custodians of Boran cattle, we share this experience to remind fellow farmers that every life in the herd matters—and knowledge is our strongest defense.

May Number 39’s loss teach us and protect others in the future. 🐄💔

Every Monday, our herd reminds us that growth doesn’t have to be chaotic. Out here in the veld, movement is intentional. Even the youngest calves know to follow the rhythm of the land ,grazing, resting, rising again.

There’s something peaceful about watching cattle that don’t just survive… but belong.
They read the pasture. They stay together. They don’t panic at every sound.
Maybe this week, we follow their lead:
Move with purpose. Eat when you’re hungry. Rest without guilt. Stay close to those who know the way.

Happy Monday from all of us at Zunde Boran Herd ,where the herd teaches us more than any textbook could.

Boran Calves: Born to Get Ahead

Don’t let the fluff fool you ,these little legends are genetic overachievers.

From just a few months old, Boran calves show off impressive muscle tone, strong bone structure, and a calm temperament that makes them easy to manage. But the real magic? They mature faster than most indigenous and crossbred calves.
Why Early Maturity Matters:

In beef farming, time is money and Boran calves are bred to grow faster, wean earlier, and thrive sooner.
Here’s what sets them apart:

🔸 Growth Rate:
Boran calves can reach weaning weight (around 200kg) at just 6–7 months, even under low-input systems.
That’s up to 30% faster than many indigenous breeds.

🔸 Muscle Development:
Their muscle tone becomes visible early — giving you a preview of their future frame and beef potential.

🔸 Low Birth Weight, High Survivability:
They’re born smaller (average 28–32kg) but are hardy, agile, and adapt quickly to their environment. This lowers calf mortality rates significantly.

🔸 Weaning Efficiency:
Boran cows produce just enough milk to support fast calf growth without compromising their own body condition — a unique breed trait that ensures both dam and calf remain productive.

🔸 Temperament:
Calm and docile calves are easier to manage, brand, and vaccinate — reducing labor stress and injury risks.

Did You Know?

✅ Boran heifers can begin cycling at 14–15 months and are often ready to calve down safely by 24 months.
✅ By the time a Boran bull calf reaches 18–24 months, it already exhibits strong masculine traits and breeding potential.
✅ Boran calves can thrive on natural pastures — making them ideal for sustainable, low-cost feed systems.

At Zunde Boran Herd, we’re not just raising cattle ,we’re raising early promise, strong genetics, and dependable returns.

WEDNESDAY WANDERER

“Not all who wander are lost…”

Meet Mrs Personal Space

She’s not lost. She’s recharging.
The type to ghost the herd, then return like nothing happened.

She doesn’t do chaos. She doesn’t do noise.
She likes her grass untouched and her peace uninterrupted.
You’ll catch her grazing alone, deep in thought… probably plotting world domination (or just thinking about lunch).

Every herd has that one loner.
At Zunde Boran Herd, we respect boundaries ,even the moo-dy kind.

The Mother, The Mission
This is more than livestock ,this is lineage.
More than a cow and calf ,this is legacy in motion.
Here at Zunde Boran Herd, we don’t just breed animals.
We breed resilience. We cultivate heritage. We nurture futures.
In this moment, you see a mother standing tall beside her calf ,but behind the image lies generations of selection, survival, and silent strength.
The mother, calm yet alert, has endured harsh sun, lean seasons, and predator threats and still, she stands. Not just for herself, but for the calf who walks beside her.

📍 Breed Truth:
Boran cows are revered for their deep-rooted maternal instincts.
They calve easily, fiercely protect their young, and produce rich milk even in drought. Their strength isn’t forced ,it’s inherited, nurtured, and passed on like a quiet promise.

👣 At Zunde Boran Herd, every pairing is intentional.
We believe in quality over quantity.
In dams who give more than meat or milk ,they give continuity.
They raise calves that walk with calm confidence and healthy weight ,calves who will one day lead herds of their own.

💬 To our followers, especially the youth and women building from scratch:
This image is your Monday reminder that the future doesn’t always roar ,sometimes, it walks quietly beside its mother in the dust, learning how to stand tall.
