As a livestock farmer, your first line of defence is being prepared and observant. Always keep your livestock extension officer and local veterinarian on speed dial — they are your go-to people whenever you notice anything unusual.

Step 1: Observe and Act Fast

If you notice abnormal behaviour or any signs of illness, don’t wait. Quick action can save your animal and protect the rest of your herd.
1. Isolate the sick animal immediately.
2. Provide clean, dry bedding and access to fresh water.
3. Monitor its condition closely and record any changes in your farm record book.

Know your animal’s normal range.
• Cattle’s normal body temperature: 38.0°C – 39.3°C
Use a livestock thermometer whenever an animal appears unwell.
