September is when your orchard really starts to shift into gear 🌱 Warmer days, early fruit set, and fresh growth make it a busy month to get everything in order before the season takes off.

✅️ Prune any late branches that are damaged or crossing.
✅️ Mulch around each tree to hold moisture as temperatures rise.
✅️ Check irrigation lines and make sure your trees are getting a deep soak.
✅️ Tidy up around the base of trees to reduce pests and improve airflow.
✅️ Inspect posts, wires and gates so your structure is ready for netting.
✅️ Its too early for putting throwover netting on your trees as they still have lots of growing to do, but definitely make a note to be ready once they've set their fruit.

Spring is when some of our busiest WA birds start moving through the orchard 🐦 Silvereyes, twenty eights and red wattlebirds all become more active as the weather warms and your fruit begins to colour.

Silvereyes travel in small flocks and are quick to spot soft new fruit. Twenty eights are strong chewers and will happily take bites out of anything they can reach. Red wattlebirds are constantly searching for energy during spring because they are feeding young, which makes ripening fruit an easy target.

As soon as fruit starts to soften and show colour, these birds will move in fast. A few pecks can ruin a whole crop, especially early in the season.

Most of these birds are simply looking for water and energy, especially through the hotter months. A ripe apple, plum or fig gives them both. We love our local wildlife and it is always a good idea to support them. A shallow bird bath placed away from your orchard gives them the water they are searching for. A small feeding station can also help draw the larger species away from your trees.

Strawberries are among the first fruits to ripen in spring, and they quickly catch the eye of silvereyes. 🍓 As soon as the berries start to blush, these little birds will move in fast because soft fruit is easy for them to peck and full of moisture.

Early strawberries are especially vulnerable because they sit low to the ground and are often grown in open beds. A few pecks can spoil a whole punnet before you even get to pick it.

If you have been following along, we are now up to the third and final weekend of building an EZBuild fully enclosed netted orchard structure 🌿 The first weekend was all about getting your poles in the ground. The second weekend was when you installed all of your wires and cables. Now you are ready to bring it all together and install the netting.

This is the perfect time to get friends and family involved because extra pairs of hands will make this stage much easier. A couple of tips will help the day run smoothly. Ask everyone to wear t‑shirts or hoodies because anything with buttons will get caught on the netting. It also helps to choose a day without wind.

As you pull the netting out of the bale, stretch it wide first and then pass it over the length of the structure, hanging it over the cables. Take your time to spread it out and get it square before you secure it.

My friend Shelley was telling me the other day about a new bird that had started visiting their garden. She was chuffed to see a kingfisher hanging around 💙 They have a leafy green courtyard with a bit of a tropical feel and a pond along one wall. The pond has always had plenty of fish in it. After a while she realised there were fewer and fewer fish, and then she connected the dots. The kingfisher was fishing in their pond.
