When we met Paul at Crackpots, he told us he wanted bird netting to cover a few old horse stables he was using as chook yards. Talk about an understatement. Check out the Chook Mahal he has built.

Paul’s flock are gorgeous mixed-breed bantam chickens: Rose comb, Australorps, Leghorns, Sussex, Rhode Island Red, Polish, Pekin and even the very quiet Lang Shang breed.

Using the horse stables as the starting point for the chook yards gave the chickens indoor and outdoor space. Trapdoors at the end of the yards even let the chickens access the green grass section. Luxury.

The problem was that Paul was losing a lot of eggs to crows. (Who knew crows were egg thieves?!) They were also concerned about the threat of bird flu, so enclosing the outdoor yard was the best option. Because he was going to the trouble of permanently installing the netting, Paul chose our 6-ply, 1 1/4 inch netting, the same netting we recommend for EZBuild structures. It works well under tension and lasts for years.

We know birds can be the bane of a productive gardener’s existence (why else do we sell bird netting?) but they are also a really important part of a healthy environment. And honestly, who doesn’t love the magpies warbling while you potter around the garden 🌿

If you have a spare 20 minutes next week, you can be part of Australia’s largest citizen science exercise, the Great Aussie Bird Count. You can do it from anywhere within Australia, all you need to do is register.

Jump onboard and join more than 60,000 Australians who will be counting from Monday. It runs from 19 to 25 October.

Here are a few quick tips for getting the best results:
✅ Crackpots shadecloth has reinforced edging and buttonholes along both sides, making it easy to join sections together
✅ To join two pieces, overlap the long edges and thread nylon or PVC-coated wire through the buttonholes to reduce wear over time

Summer is on the way, so here is a quick refresher on why 35% shadecloth is one of the best options for creating a windbreak 🌀🌿

In many parts of WA, wind can cause just as much damage as heat. A good windbreak slows the wind enough to protect plants, without turning into a solid barrier that creates turbulence on the sheltered side.

35% shadecloth hits that sweet spot. The weave is open enough to let air pass through, but tight enough to reduce wind pressure on your garden and crops. It also gives a handy bit of shade at the same time.

Here is what makes it work so well:

Spring is here, and everything is waking up! The weather is warm, the ground is still workable, and all your fruit trees are covered in new growth. This is the perfect time to get moving if you are planning on building your EZBuild orchard structure.

The phones have been running hot with enquiries. Right now, we can still get kits out the door fairly quickly, with around a week’s lead time at worst. As the weather gets warmer, we will get busier, and despite our best efforts, it may take a little longer.

So if this is the year you are putting aside those three weekends to get your orchard structure built, consider this your gentle reminder to jump onto it sooner rather than later 🍎

The Crackpots love a country show, and October and November are packed with shows right across the Southwest 🌿. They are a great day out for everyone, with plenty to see, do, and most importantly, eat.

We always enjoy sitting in the sun watching the horse events, then heading into the pavilions to check out what the best gardeners and cooks have entered. One of our favourite stops is usually the poultry shed, but with bird flu around this year, we will miss that.

It looks like everyone is getting ready for a very hot summer and organising their shadecloth early to protect gardens and plants from the heat and the wind 🌡️🍃

Our shadecloth has literally been walking out the door. More stock is on the way, but over the next couple of weeks we may be a little low on a few lines.

Right now we have:
✅ Plenty of 50% Beige in 20 m rolls, perfect for smaller projects
✅ Lots of 3.66 m wide shadecloth
✅ More stock arriving soon
