One of the questions we get asked is how many trees you can fit into one of our EZBuild Orchard Structures. There is no single answer because it depends on what you plan to grow, but it is worth thinking through a few key points.
First, what are you planting? Dwarf varieties will take up less space. Raised vege beds need a different layout compared to full-size fruit trees.
For fruit trees, we recommend keeping them pruned to around 2.5m in height. At this size, you can manage them easily on a standard ladder. It also gives a metre of space between the roof of the structure and the trees, so they can grow in spring without hitting the netting and getting tangled.
At around 2.5m in height, most trees will be about 3m in diameter. When you are planning where to dig your holes, make sure you leave enough room for when the trees reach full size.
Also, think about what kind of machinery you want to use in the orchard. Whatever you choose, make sure there is enough space between the rows once the trees are mature, so you can access them.
