This design has handled winters as cold as -50 in Mongolia… and more recently in the Yukon, so your average Canadian cold snap isn’t going to be a problem.

Wool felt insulation holds heat and naturally manages humidity, and running your stove pipe straight up through the toono spreads warmth through the whole space optimally.

A couple rules of thumb: size your stove to heat about 3x your yurt's square footage, and lean on a local stove expert who actually knows wood heat (don't just guess).

A Groovy customer sent us pics of his 22' natural wood yurt Yves delivered this past summer, which they set up at a 7,000 ft. elevation close to Zion National Park in Utah. They made a family project of building the platform and the deck (see photos). They are still working on a few finishing details, but now the family will be able to wake up to these spectacular vistas all year round.

"We absolutely love it and are really glad we were able to catch you during your delivery trip and make it work. The craftsmanship really is beautiful. We especially love the natural wood, horsehair ropes, and the overall traditional, natural feel of it. It fits the setting even better than we had hoped."

"We’re excited to spend more time in it and are planning to use it for meditation, sunset and stargazing experiences, and possibly some small retreats focused on things like photography and painting."

Meet the engineer who didn't just help design the True Canadian Yurt, she moved into it. Meet Kady.

Kady is a materials engineer on our team, and she's the reason our roof does something most yurts don't. Instead of running beams straight to one centre point, hers run clockwise and counterclockwise: what's called a reciprocal roof. It's stronger, doesn't rely on a central pole, and meets building code across most of Ontario.

Then she tested her own design the honest way, by actually living in it. She’s been steadily building out the kitchen and washroom herself, turning the space from prototype into an actual, permanent, year-round home in Ontario.

We drive 10,000+ km a year for this. Worth every kilometre.

It all starts with Baata and his family in Mongolia. Every ger is hand-built and hand-painted from tamarack, Siberian pine & pure sheep wool, the same way Mongolian families have made their homes for 3,000 years.
Once it's ready, we load up and bring it the rest of the way to your door. 🧡

And because every yurt starts with the land, we give a little back: 25 trees planted for every one sold. 🌲

The leaves are starting to steal the spotlight, but don't let your yurt get lost in all that pretty chaos. A few fall check-ins should be done before winter soon knocks on your door:

Give the canvas a once-over for rips, stains or mould. Trim back any branches getting a little too friendly with your walls. Snug up ropes and straps so they're doing their job. And if your door or toono wood is looking worn, now's the time for a coat of varnish.

An hour or two today beats a soggy surprise in spring.

There’s something pretty special about seeing one of our yurts become someone’s home. ✨

Camille is officially settled into full-time yurt living in the Yukon, and we couldn’t resist sharing a little look at how she’s made the space her own.

And as if the cozy setup wasn’t enough, she recently caught the Northern Lights glowing right above her yurt. Seeing them through the toono might just be one of the best views from home.

Thank you, Camille, for sharing a glimpse into your yurt life with us!

Summer came with a few extra paws around the Groovy Barn. 🐱

We had the sweetest surprise when Муур (pronounced “Muur”) welcomed five kittens into the family. After plenty of tiny adventures and one very cute photo shoot, four have now headed off to their furrever homes.

One little guy is staying behind with Mom, and he still needs a name. We’d love to give him a Mongolian name, so send us your ideas.

There's truly always something new to learn about the Mongolian ger. From the way it's built to the materials it's made from, every ger has a story rooted in generations of tradition. 💛

Many of the details that make a ger so unique are the ones people don't often hear about until they start looking a little closer.

Our team has put together 22 things everyone should know about the Mongolian ger, sharing some of the history, craftsmanship, and practical details that have made these remarkable homes part of everyday life for generations.

It's a great read if you're just getting introduced to gers, and just as worthwhile if you've been fascinated by them for years.
