Homeowners: Before investing in a water filtration system, look for THESE certifications! 💧

Not all water filtration systems are created equal, and just because a product claims to provide cleaner water doesn't necessarily mean it's been independently certified to do so.

Here are 5 NSF/ANSI standards worth knowing:

✅ NSF/ANSI 42: Certifies claims related to improving water's taste, odour, and reducing aesthetic impurities like chlorine.

✅ NSF/ANSI 53: Covers specific contaminants with potential health effects, such as lead.

✅ NSF/ANSI 58: Designed for reverse osmosis (RO) drinking water systems.

✅ NSF/ANSI 44: Covers residential water softeners and their ability to reduce hardness minerals.

✅ NSF/ANSI 401: Covers the reduction of certain emerging contaminants, including select pharmaceuticals and chemicals.

One important thing to remember: A certification doesn't automatically mean a system removes everything. Always check which specific contaminants the exact model is certified to reduce.

After removing fluoride in 2011, Calgary officially reintroduced it into the city's drinking water on June 30, 2025.

But why the change?

In 2021, Calgary held a citywide vote, with 62% of participating voters supporting the return of fluoride.

The decision was primarily driven by dental health. Fluoride is added to drinking water to help strengthen tooth enamel and reduce the risk of cavities.

However, water fluoridation remains a topic of discussion, with some residents supporting its dental health benefits and others raising questions about personal choice and water treatment.

Calgary now targets a fluoride concentration of 0.7 mg/L in its drinking water.

PPM stands for parts per million. In simple terms, it measures how much dissolved calcium and magnesium are in your water.

The higher the number, the harder your water is.

At 126 ppm, Calgary’s water falls into the moderately hard category. At 262 ppm, it’s considered very hard.

That’s why you might notice white buildup on your faucets, spots on your dishes, or soap that doesn’t lather as easily.

Hard water isn’t necessarily unsafe to drink, but over time, those minerals can build up inside your plumbing, water heater, and appliances. This buildup can cause expensive damage.
