The Lake District.
We spent the most time here. We absolutely fell the most in love with this area out of everywhere we went. Don’t get me wrong, we loved every area we visited. But the Lake District is truly stunning. While there we seriously debated canceling the rest of our hotels and just spend the rest of our time there. We are already scheming ways to one day make it back to the Lake District.
I also feel like I dressed for the occasion. With my leather brown blundstones, faded black jeans, mossy colored sweater and grey hair. I feel like I could have simply faded into the background to never be seen again. Only to be hiding in plain sight.
We stayed in Ambleside and visited a handful of close towns. We spent the morning at Beatrix Potter’s cottage and wandered the beautiful gardens.
We spent the next day exploring a little further out and ended up at Vindolanda an active archeology excavation of a nearly 2000 year old Roman fort and townsite. This trip has turned us into big Roman/Briton nerds🤓
But seriously if you ever make here you HAVE to go to Vindolanda it was one of the coolest things I’ve seen in my life. After ward, we hiked a bit of Hadrians Wall. A huge ass wall that spanned the width of England to keep the barbarians to the north out of Roman Briton.
The history and preservation is absolutely mind bending. I top of that we found 4500 year old standing stones in the most magical spot. It’s exactly the place I would have chosen as a pagan to worship 4500 years ago.
On our trip, we covered a lot of ground and saw a little bit of everything. If we ever make it to the UK again, I would focus on hunkering down and exploring more here.
