Cartwheel Farm

Cartwheel Farm We are a small family farm in the Creston Valley of British Columbia. We grow and deliver certified organic vegetables, herbs, and fruit with joy!

We are Nigel and Laura Francis. We are working to build a farm that feels right for our time and place… and for our family. We grow on a small-scale with joy and attention to detail. We farm to cultivate health, justice, freedom, beauty, and contentment. Our pre-schooler, baby, and farm dog, are trusty companions. Since 2014 we have been harvesting the best of what our fields have to offer and del

ivering it directly to our customers. Each week, we hand pick a good variety of vegetables. Deliveries may also include herbs and fruit. As the season unfolds and what is growing changes, so does the selection. Deliveries come with fun, easy recipes for inspiration and a note from the field. Our season runs from the first week of June to mid-November. We offer weekly and every-other-week delivery options. We strive to build meaningful, long-term relationships with the people we feed. We offer a range of payment options, strive to accommodate dietary needs, and are flexible about missed weeks. Get in touch to learn more about what we offer! We also supply The Bistro at Skimmerhorn Winery, Real Food Cafe, Black Salt Cafe, Red's Breads & Bakery, Yahk Mountain Cafe, and the Yasodhara Ashram. When we have surplus, we sell at the Creston Valley Farmers' Market. We belong to the Kootenay Organic Growers Society, our region's organic certifying body. We are proud to host the Creston Valley cache of the Kootenay Local Agricultural Society tool library.

🌎 🐝 💛 That was a wild World Bee Day! Just after a visit from Erickson Elementary students, the farm was swarmed! We were graced by a lively swarm of bees and then by our friend Jeff of Honey Bee Zen Apiaries, Swan Valley Honey Ltd, Canadian Honey Council, B.C. Honey Producers Association, and Fields Forward.

What a gift to have such a knowledgeable, passionate, and generous bee expert in our community. (Jeff fit us in just before a CBC Radio interview about the importance of pollinators.)

He was back today to attempt what he called the most challenging swarm capture of his career. The bees - and there were lots of them - had settled high in a tree above our compost yard.

Our crew loved watching him work and getting mini lessons along the way.

This evening Jeff drove away with the bees. We are resting easy knowing that they will get the top notch care that allows Jeff and Amanda produce such exceptional honey!

Do you spy what I spy? Two farm brothers planting the last of our winter squash. A tad late, but cute as can be.

Edwin: “This is perfect. First there was rain to make the soil nice. Now there is sun, so we can just be planting. Then there will be probably be rain again. That’s what the seeds wanted. Man! So perfect!”

P.S. Thanks to our longtime plant-whispering crew member Amy for getting most of this year’s seeds in the ground. And to the rest of our crew for being the team that prepped the beds.

P.P.S. Thanks to Johnny's Selected Seeds for being such a reliable source of stellar certified organic seeds.

P.P.P.S. Check back in autumn for the harvest!

Spring is so many things. On a suddenly stormy spring evening like this one, it’s tender to be reminded that spring foods are there to meet all of what the season brings. Tonight, turnips, asparagus, mini pac Choi, and cilantro meet Cartwheel curry paste and chili crisp for a meal that warms and comforts. Mmm.

Meet the most enthusiastic future Cartwheel crew member out there! This spunky human has been visiting the farm and eating from our garden since she was tiny. Now she vows that when she’s old enough, she’ll work here just like her big sister did for many years. Check out her project on her career ambitions… she won turnips for her hard work.

It fills our hearts to know that there are future gardeners growing in this valley. We love that we can hold a space on our crew for such a firecracker!

Throwback to 2015, before we started tending this land. Over the last twelve seasons, home delivery customers have brought us the stability and resilience that we've needed to grow this farm into a pretty special place!
