Sitting in the seed house planting the seeds we got at Seedy Saturday on the weekend and ran into this one at the bottom of the bag.

Huh, that's a cool name. I wonder what it means?

Google it..... Really Cool Old Squash..... 😑

Who named this? The Miami Nation's version of the Beardy Farmer???!?!?

At least The Beardy Farmer and the Rainman over at William Tell Family Estate can now feel confident in their naming conventions. It's apparently endemic.

Only 6$ a dozen!

He'll come say hi if you stop by. Just be sure to check that he doesn't hop into your car for a ride. He's partial to rv's, but really, any car will do.

He likes to feel the wind in his fur.

Be there or be out of the loop!

This photo is most definitely not edited, and those are most definitely what the Beardy Farmer's Happy Tomatoes look like.

Surprisingly, these tomatoes are grown without sprays, GMOs, or other buzzwords. It's the growing on a south facing hill with plenty of sunshine and water that causes them to look exactly like that, don't you know.

In other really real news.... Catch us at 2 farmers' markets this weekend!

Our home market of Creston Valley Farmers' Market Saturday from 9 - 1pm.

And the Cranbrook Farmer's Market Saturday from 10 - 1pm.

Can't make Saturdays? That's okay!

Swing by our farmstand at 3404 Erickson rd Sunday - Friday, 9am - Dark, to snag your very own happy tomatoes.

And eggs, and peppers, and cantaloupe, and grapes....

Ever wish you could just peel 4 tomatoes and have enough to make a small batch of salsa?

If so, Anthony's Italian Roma is the tomato for you!

Brought over to Canada by Anthony's Dad, this chonker of a tomato easily weighs about a pound each.

Lots of meat and not a lot of seeds make this the ideal saucing and salsa tomato. I've done other things, but sauce is where she really shines.

So if you've been delaying making your sauces, now would be the time to swing by. We have 600 lbs fresh picked last night and now sitting in the farm stand.

Buy over 20lbs and we'll give you the farm stand deal of only 1$ a pound!

Hit up 3404 Erickson rd between 9am and dark to nab your fresh tomatoes today!

Sometimes people ask me what kind of tomatoes we grow and I'm like 🤷🏼‍♀️ red ones?

I just plant the seeds I'm given, man. I don't actually pay attention to anything.

Anyways. The Beardy Farmer was all. "What kind of farmer are you???!?!" And gave me a tutorial that I am now passing on to you

San Marzano Type: 2$/lb, 20lbs and up 1.50$/lb
The gold standard for sauces. These are a "dry" meaty tomato based on the Italian San Marzano tomatoes. But because that's a protected name, these have the word "type" tacked on the end to avoid a lawsuit.

"Regular" Romas: 2$/lb, 20lbs and up 1.50$/lb
If you googled Roma, you'd either get a picture of a Romanian Baba or a tomato, and that tomato would be this variety. Great for sauces, eating, or chucking at politicians.

Big Betty Roma: 2$/lb
Think Amish Paste tomato but bigger. These solid chonkers are bred by a local greenhouse goddess and make saucing so fast and easy. This is our first year with these babies, and it's safe to say I will be saving a literal tonne of seed for next year.

Anthony's Roma: 2$/lb
Another localish tomato. Brought over from Italy by Anthony's dad, these knobby Roma are a true heritage variety.

Yellow Globe: 2$/lb, 20lbs and up 1.50$/lb
These are actually called something more fancy pants, but the seed packet was thrown out decades ago, so now they're Yellow Globe. Low in acid and AMAZING on sandwiches. We don't recommend canning them, but the eating is fire.

Black Prince: 2$/lb, 20lbs and up 1.50/lb
The seed was saved in 2011 and somehow still grew into monster plants. This is another low acid tomato, so it's not so good for canning. They look kind of gross, but they are the prince of sandwiches and salads. Sprinkle a little salt, and your tastebuds will rejoice.

"Regular" Rounds: 2$/lb, 20lbs and up 1.50$/lb
These are what you want for canning. They're round, red, taste good, and are easy (for me) to skin. Or just blend them with the skin on. It all tastes good.

This has been tomato time with Kait.
