Sometimes people ask me what kind of tomatoes we grow and I'm like 🤷🏼♀️ red ones?
I just plant the seeds I'm given, man. I don't actually pay attention to anything.
Anyways. The Beardy Farmer was all. "What kind of farmer are you???!?!" And gave me a tutorial that I am now passing on to you
San Marzano Type: 2$/lb, 20lbs and up 1.50$/lb
The gold standard for sauces. These are a "dry" meaty tomato based on the Italian San Marzano tomatoes. But because that's a protected name, these have the word "type" tacked on the end to avoid a lawsuit.
"Regular" Romas: 2$/lb, 20lbs and up 1.50$/lb
If you googled Roma, you'd either get a picture of a Romanian Baba or a tomato, and that tomato would be this variety. Great for sauces, eating, or chucking at politicians.
Big Betty Roma: 2$/lb
Think Amish Paste tomato but bigger. These solid chonkers are bred by a local greenhouse goddess and make saucing so fast and easy. This is our first year with these babies, and it's safe to say I will be saving a literal tonne of seed for next year.
Anthony's Roma: 2$/lb
Another localish tomato. Brought over from Italy by Anthony's dad, these knobby Roma are a true heritage variety.
Yellow Globe: 2$/lb, 20lbs and up 1.50$/lb
These are actually called something more fancy pants, but the seed packet was thrown out decades ago, so now they're Yellow Globe. Low in acid and AMAZING on sandwiches. We don't recommend canning them, but the eating is fire.
Black Prince: 2$/lb, 20lbs and up 1.50/lb
The seed was saved in 2011 and somehow still grew into monster plants. This is another low acid tomato, so it's not so good for canning. They look kind of gross, but they are the prince of sandwiches and salads. Sprinkle a little salt, and your tastebuds will rejoice.
"Regular" Rounds: 2$/lb, 20lbs and up 1.50$/lb
These are what you want for canning. They're round, red, taste good, and are easy (for me) to skin. Or just blend them with the skin on. It all tastes good.
This has been tomato time with Kait.
