Mellengrove

Mellengrove MellenGrove is located on the Kootenay river near Creston, BC. Our herd is closed. We test for CAE and Johnne’s annually.

We breed goats for the homestead market and a few for the purebred Nubian and purebred Saanen fanciers.

At this time of the year, the goats are mainly on forage. They have access to grass, weeds including dandelion, burdock (high in protein), wormwood (natural dewormer) and a host of other munchies. This time of year, they really like the young snowberry leaves and poplar leaves. Crocus leads them out each morning and back home in the evening and they free range over the 11 acres of the diked area and can drink from the river. And they love to go for walks - they have come to accept Dixie as part of the herd.

Our goat herd is a mix of purebred Nubian goats, purebred Saanen goats and a mix of breeds designed to bring the best milk and meat combination to homesteads.

Let me tell you about our Nubians.

Our herd queen is Mellengrove Spring Crocus whose sire was from Apple Road and her dam was Garden Gate Summer Bliss. Crocus brings some amazing genetics together. Her half-sister is Mellengrove Queen Freya and she brings together two great Garden Gate lines.
Both Freya and Crocus produced twins this year. Crocus’ boy has been sold and her girl is this year’s keeper doeling from the Nubian side of the house. Freya’s adorable boys are up for consideration. They are a great opportunity to get some Garden Gate genetics in British Columbia.

A little bit about how we raise our goats.
For a good part of the year, our goats forage on our 16 acres along the Kootenay River. They have free access to 2nd cut alfalfa & grass hay that is grown by our neighbours. When in milk, our girls also get grain. Again this is locally grown not 5 km from our house. So our goats are truly Kootenay-raised.

A week of kidding has resulted in 4 new Nubian kids, 2 new Saanen kids, and 4 new Saanen/Nubian/Alpine crosses.

Another day of kidding and we have two more bucklings - this time from Helena. These will be amazing herdsires as they come from strong milking lines: Saanen, Nubian and Alpine.

And then there were four! Some gorgeous Givernay girls.

It was a cold, damp day and the girls are enjoying being in the barn. They are, in order of appearance, Gossamer, Lacy, Crocus, Freya, Lily and Helena. Crocus has started to groan when she breathes - she is so pregnant. All, but Gossamer, are due in a month at most - Gossamer probably three weeks after that. Gossamer and Lacy will kid purebred Saanens, while Crocus and Freya will kid purebred Nubians. Helena and Lily will offer grade kids from high-producing lines - perfect for the homestead family looking for milk and meat. Let me know if you would like to reserve a kid from one of these lovely girls.

We are a month out from kidding, so today the girls got their vitamins and vaccination.
