Terrible timing to have chicks at this point in the year but the joy they have brought us for the last week and a half has been immeasurable.

In happier news the mink (still an ongoing issue though we have defeated two and are working on a third) has driven the chickens out of the coop which has been chaotic and horrible for egg production. However several ambitious ladies have hatched clutches of eggs, meaning there are babies everywhere (going into the wet season which is excellent timing 🙃). This mom successfully hid a clutch of 12 or so eggs in the garden and is now the proud mother of a gaggle of multicoloured fluffballs.

We’ll have to round them up and get them into mink-proof brooders quite soon…

Lessons learned the hard way…

Though not as hard as it could have been.

Someone should run “farming 101” courses for people who get into farming later in life and don’t have the family history or resources of other farmers available to them…it would be so helpful to feel like we know what tf we are doing sometimes…

If you need fall fruit inspo, look no further! Come by our farm stand and pick up some plums, go home and turn them into this: GREEK YOGURT WITH STEWED PLUMS AND SPICED GRANOLA!

Stewed plums couldn’t be easier - just remove the pit and roughly chop into chunks, toss in a pot with some sugar (1/4 to 1/2 cup depending on the sweetness of the plums and your taste preference), a squeeze of lemon (again, amount based on your preference), a splash of vanilla and a couple tbsp of water. Toss, heat on medium until boiling, then turn down the heat to low, cover, and simmer until the plums break down and the whole mixture turns to a deliciously thick compote. If it’s still too loose at the end, take the lid off and boil for a bit until you get your desired thickness.

Serve on plain Greek yogurt with some of your favourite granola (our Hillpoint granola has oats, nuts, seeds, spices, and is lightly sweetened with maple syrup) for a delicious fall-inspired breakfast or protein- and fibre-packed snack.

A post I’ve struggled to write because the rage and sadness is still so fresh. A week ago, the mink that has ravaged our farm for the last month, wiped out our entire flock of pheasants. In a matter of hours they went from flapping happily around their pen to mercilessly slaughtered by a horrible creature who does nothing but kill for sport.

The kids and I had a good cry about it, filled with rage and frustration that despite the traps, despite their perceived safety in the barn, despite everything we’ve tried in desperation to save our birds, it was all gone in an instant.

In hindsight, one benefit of free ranging animals (which the pheasants weren’t and couldn’t ever be due to their wild game nature) is escape. When the mink came into the coop, they could run away (see the photo of chickens now roosting in the pear tree, away from the coop where the mink could strike). When it slinked its horrible body into the pheasant pen, they had nowhere to go. Cue the guilt.

Fortunately (?) the pheasants weren’t ever meant to make money. We were raising them purely for joy. Joy in hearing their wild calls, looking at their beautiful plumage (which was juuuust starting to come in 💔), and thinking of some of the happiest memories we have from times ago. But maybe that makes it worse, I’m not sure. It all feels so bad.

And it’s all gone. It’s too late to start more for the winter, so we now wait to try again next year with hearts broken, sad for the loss of the joy we tried to bring ourselves this year and the horrible and pointless loss of life . And renewed vigour in trying to trap this little bastard and end its rampage on our farm.

So next time you wonder why mink are horrible, no good, very bad animals. Remember this post. Remember the tears of little boys and grown a$$ adults having to clean up the slaughter of innocent little birds who were just trying to grow up and live life.

And please, please, universe, let us catch this little bu**er soon.
