Twenty tons per acre, per year. That is not a small operation — that is a underground city running three shifts with no days off. Each worm swallows dirt, strips it for nutrients, and leaves behind castings that are five times richer in nitrogen and seven times richer in available plant food than the surrounding soil. The tunnels they leave open act like tiny highways for water — pulling rain down through the ground instead of letting it sheet off the surface and carry topsoil away. Darwin spent forty years studying earthworms and concluded they were among the most important creatures in the history of life on land. Modern soil scientists confirmed it. A single healthy acre can hold over a million worms working simultaneously beneath every footstep. The factory never clocks out. It never announces itself. It just keeps converting what was dead into what feeds everything living above it. The most productive ground on Earth is not a warehouse or a lab. It is six inches below the surface, quietly humming. Decay is not the end of the story. It is the raw material. [U1WQB]

The European nightcrawler (Dendrobaena hortensis) is a medium-small earthworm averaging about 1.5 g when fully grown. Generally blueish, pink-grey in color with a banded or striped appearance, the tips of their tails are often cream or pale yellow. When the species has not been feeding, it is pale pink. The species is usually found in deep woodland litter and garden soils that are rich in organic matter in European countries. D. hortensis is sold primarily as a bait worm, but its popularity as a composting worm is increasing.[

Vermicomposting, or worm composting, is a method of breaking down organic waste (like food scraps and paper) into a nutrient-rich organic fertilizer using earthworms—typically Red Wigglers (Eisenia fetida). This process converts waste into highly fertile worm castings, which can be safely used to promote plant growth in indoor potted plants and gardens.
