Once asparagus season starts, it’s generally go, go, go. We take advantage of asparagus’ enthusiasm and how much the plants produce early in the season when they have so much energy. But the reality, friends, is that this plant likes her rest.
At some point, generally 6-8 weeks after we see the first tips poke through, asparagus is ready for a break. The energy is dwindling and in order to be ready for next year, we need to stop picking those tasty spears.
That means…the season is short. By the end of June (sometimes earlier) we must stop picking, allowing the plant to turn into fern and begin replenishing the energy in its roots.
So, now is the time. While asparagus is at her prime in Alberta, make sure you’re stopping in to get some!
