Our name sake in flower gifted by cherished guests. This edible-from-top-to-bottom indigenous asparagus is rich and history, and reminds us of where we live, work, play, cook, and gather around the dining room table.
Even though they’re delicious, there are a few good reasons to not harvest, camas bulbs. Garry Oak ecosystems ,which includes camas meadows, are considered critically endangered in Canada and receive protection through various provincial, municipal, and non-profit initiatives. Camas bulbs were a cultural keystone species and a trade commodity propagated by Coast Salish peoples in particular for millennia. If they’re not cooked well, the inulin may upset your stomach. And last but not least, when not in bloom, the edible camas and the death camas look the same. 😱
