You may have seen this bold colonel around our shop lately, and our new KBC coffee is just that.

Bold and indulgent KBC is aged to perfection in single-use Kentucky bourbon barrels, capturing the rich, smoky essence of southern craftsmanship.

With notes of charred oak, caramel and a hint of sweet spice, it delivers a flavour experience much like the colonels secret recipe!

When you get your coffee from Back Road, you can be confident that your brew never saw the inside of the commodities market. However, the C-market (stock market) price for coffee still casts a shadow over even the finest coffee. If the commodities market starts shelling out more per pound for basic, low-quality coffee, it’ll push up the price of Fair Trade and Specialty Coffees. The C-market price acts as a floor for Fair Trade, which promises a small premium above market price. But even with the promise of a premium above market (Fair Trade) if the market crashes, it’s not uncommon for farmers to burn their crop and grow something that could turn a profit or in many instances they have simply abandoned their farm. It’s a sad situation that relies on companies and individuals to do the right thing and pay a price that creates a winning situation for all, the producer, the roaster (us) and the consumer (you) can all win and this is how.

By working with reputable importers that share the same values as we do, that is to say that value transparency, fair business practices and quality we have a foundation that makes this system work. We are invested in quality and sustainability, so by paying more for our coffee, we are seeing better quality of coffee coming through our doors, we know that farmers are earning a living wage, and this type of system allows them to reinvest in their farm, their employees and community. Regardless of how high or how low the market can go in any economic cycle, we are always paying fair prices for our coffee and that’s something that we can all feel good about. Fair Trade was a great initiative, but over time with the wild swings in prices that we have seen, Fair Trade simply isn’t good enough to help farmers survive.

GREEN COFFEE TRADING MARKET
Coffee’s base price is set on the C Market (stock market). There are many factors that can influence this price, such as political unrest in a producing country. Adverse weather affecting the overall yield is a big one, too. To give an example: in recent months, Vietnam has seen a drought that has devastated many farmers, and it has sadly wiped out crops. The reduction in supply has put a squeeze on the overall global supply because Vietnam is relied upon to produce a fair bit of coffee, that’s putting it lightly. Vietnam produces a hell of a lot of coffee, and in times of crisis, like this, buyers move their sights to Brazil. The industry in Brazil is fulfilling its role as the coffee resource of the world in the absence of Vietnam, but this isn’t an easy task as Brazil is facing adverse weather of its own.
As you can see, the C Market price is often dictated by the most basic of economic principles, supply, and demand. But how does this affect the farmer you may ask?
At the C Market price, farmers cannot pay themselves a living wag. If you mix a subpar yield into that equation, the result is catastrophic. This scenario is played out repeatedly by those that buy their coffee at rock bottom C Market prices to turn a giant profit and leave the farmers in the dust. For the coffee industry, this simply isn’t sustainable. On the next post, we will discuss how we approach coffee buying currently and how we are trying to make a difference.

OK, we’ve held out as long as we could, but it is time to bring forth a price adjustment in both the café and on our beans. Yeah, we know change isn’t always everyone’s cup of coffee, but trust us, this one’s for all the right reasons!

For the past 3 years, we’ve seen costs spike in green specialty coffee, café supplies, wages and ingredients. Despite trying to absorb most of these hits, we’ve hit a point where this approach is no longer sustainable to keep serving our awesome community.

Ever wonder what's behind those coffee price tags? It's a wild ride, influenced by commodity traded market madness and Mother Nature's whims. Vietnam's drought, Brazil's weather tantrums – they've all been throwing curveballs our way. And let's not forget the Arabica coffee price surge of a whopping 40% since pre-pandemic. We've been holding our ground, but we can't keep playing nice forever.

While we can’t control global factors like those listed above, we strongly believe that quality is still worth paying for. Choosing Back Road Coffee means you’re backing a small family business and you’re choosing to support smallholder farmers worldwide. Together, we get to contribute to the sustainability of specialty coffee farming, which benefits us all.

Keep a look out at this space in the weeks to come. We will be posting a series of posts that will go into further details on the issues affecting coffee sustainability and quality, impacts of nature, as well as our approach in paying “Better Than Fairtrade” prices to our farmers. These will allow us all to get on the same page.

We also encourage you to check out our new EXTRACTIONS – Coffee Concentrate. The innovation of this product is an answer to providing affordable coffee options in view of the inflation crisis of the moment. By using our concentrate, it’s less than $1.30 per drink, and perfect every time! Plus, have you tried it for your Espresso Martini yet? 🤯

We’ve also been brainstorming efficient ways to offset this increase by bringing you creative ways to save. Within the next few weeks, expect us to roll out fun things like a Coffee Subscription Service, a Loyalty Program for the café, a “Bring Your Own Mug” discou

About Us

Best friends since high school, Brothers-in-Law Michel and Alex have been hitting the road on their motorcycles together since the moment they were old enough to get onto the back of a bike.

Part of their roadtrip tradition has been the ritual of stopping at coffee shops along the way. Developing their palates, discovering different beans and brews.

Having a background in the food service industry, Michel and Alex took the plunge and have dedicated themselves wholeheartedly to creating the perfect brew – from bean selection, to roast, to brew methods.
