Spring isn’t the only time we get little farm babies! 🥰

How do you get babies born when we’re practically into October, you ask?

Well, the key is to get completely overwhelmed with all the summer farm work and forget to check on your ducks for a week and a half. 🙈

And since you don’t know how long mama’s been sitting on them (long enough to get 9 eggs!!!) decide to leave them and see what happens 😆

Can’t say we’re too disappointed with the results 🖤

Can you spot the difference between these rib steaks? 😳

One of them is grass finished & fodder finished. 🌱
That beef cow ate nothing but healthy, green grass and sprouts.

The other is from a feed lot (probably) and was fed corn or grain to fatten it up and just enough forage to keep its digestive system running but not cost the feed lot owner a ton of money in hay.

One of them was moved to new pasture daily and ate at its leisure in a wide open field. 🐂

The other was contained in a dry, dusty pen and given its food in a trough.

One was never sick in its life and didn’t need to be treated with antibiotics. Its environment was healthy and so was its immune system. 💪🏻

The other had low dose antibiotics and probiotics in its feed to help it stay “healthy” while its immune system battled an unnatural environment and a feed that its digestive system didn’t evolve to be able to eat without consequences.

One was raised with farming practices that had your health in mind and would result in an end product that’s highly nutrient dense with balanced omega fatty acids and antioxidants. 💚

The other was raised with practices that produce a product fast and cheap.

(Although that bottom steak only costs about $2 more than the top one).

So, did you figure out which is which? We think it’s pretty obvious. 🙃

PS. No shade to Safeway. They have to work with what they’re given. But maybe if a bunch of us start voting with our dollars we can help change the current food system. 😊

But grass-finished means only grass. Period.
Got it? 🙃🌱

As someone who has heart disease, cancer, dementia, AND glucose imbalance running around in my family tree, I’m choosing grass-finished every time 😊✅

“But don’t you guys have clay too?!”

Yes- we have the same rock solid clay as everyone else around here (darn it)! 😑

And just below that is a sheet of rock known as the Canadian Shield (double darn it)!😑😑

So if we can grow and regenerate some nice, black, fluffy soil to improve our pastures and mitigate climate change, we’re sure gonna try!

Here are our results of using Regenerative practices for 8 years up here in Northwestern Ontario!

We can see how much better our grass is growing (even during a drought like this year). 🌱

We can see how quickly it recovers after we let the cows eat it. 🐮

What we can’t always see is what’s going on below the surface! So we went out to poke around…🪏

And we’re pretty pumped with what we’ve found!

It might be a little slower getting these results up here where our growing season is only from June to September, but it IS possible!

Our goals:
💩Keep building our soil so our entire field is covered in a thriving, functional ecosystem!
🐛Keep using practices that protect our soil microbes so they help feed the plants vital minerals and nutrients.
🌎Keep growing healthier plants to draw more carbon down from the atmosphere to help stop climate change!
🌱Keep growing a healthy, dense, diverse forage to feed our cows.
🐮And keep providing you with the most naturally raised, nutritious beef around!
