The UN Year of the Woman Farmer is not only about celebrating the achievements of women farmers, but also inspiring the next generation.
So, we asked Jenn Pfenning what advice she would give to future women farmers. Here is the wisdom that she shared:
“Don’t let anyone define what being a farmer means based on your gender. We dismantle the patriarchy not by out-yelling the naysayers, but by being our full selves unabashedly. Our strength comes when we need it if we believe it will. Never let anyone shake your belief in your strength. Loudest is not strongest. Always keep your hoe sharp, your hugs fierce, and a quiet spot to hide from the world when you need to in some corner of the farm.”
Farming has been a lifelong task for Jenn. However, one aspect of it really stands out to her:
“Feeding people. We grow food. The greatest delight is that people enjoy eating it and feel nourished in body and soul. Well, and the magic of life emerging from soil. That’s pretty awesome. It is the most real magic that exists on this planet.”
We're grateful to Farm Credit Canada (FCC) for supporting this initiative, helping us share stories from the current generation of women farmers and inspire the next.
