It’s honey harvest week… after a slow start the bees have caught up and we are expecting almost double the normal first harvest. That often means less in the July harvest in a few weeks. Nature sometimes has a way of knowing what is coming around the corner …

Meet Miro- the new member of the family, now installed at Byfælleden next to Ørestad Arena. In an old European tradition, people would ‘tell the bees’ about changes to their community. We are bringing the tradition back. Miro is a home for wild bees and insects. Honey is the ‘currency of care’ that connects everything together. Share it with one you care for and plant a flower for all pollinators. I love that people wove their messages into Miro’s hair. Thanks to Ørestad Grundejerforening, Novo Nordisk fund and everyone who helped bring life to Miro. We doing it again next Saturday at Kildevands Kulturhus. See you there!

Meet Bybi’s magpie friend at the botanical gardens. Aref says individual birds recognise him and show up hopefully looking for a piece of honeycomb or drone larver. Today we are mostly harvesting for the humans but we will leave a little treat for the birds too.

Gifts for swifts… in a few days, the swifts will be back in our Copenhagen skys. They’ve come all the way from Africa and they will be feeling flirty, playful and hungry. (They eat a lot of bees - and that’s ok). Yesterday we made welcome gifts for the swifts and other birds using hair from camel, sheep, horse, musk ox and llama. As the big animals shed their winter fur, the small ones pick it up for their nests and burrows. We hung the gifts in the trees around Sundholn.

He's a short video poem of moving the bees from Kongelund to the roof of Bella Center with Aref. Both sites are surreal landscapes with huge human impacts, but with cracks of life all around. Bella's roof is like a space station ... but there is an abundance of green just 50m away.

The bees are back on the roof! Aref persuaded his son Rudi to get up at 4am to help move the bees back into town. We’ve been on rooftops positioning the hives and watching the trees flush with green and pink. In a couple of days the chestnut will be out. It’s a good day to be a bee.

“Dear bees…” In European tradition, bees were family members. It was important to tell them about births, deaths and marriages. In return they shared their honey. Yesterday we invited guests at Østerbrohusets spring celebration to recall the practice. Together we made a figure that is a home for wild bees. We shared honey and flower seeds for all pollinators. People shared the most touching stories with the bees. Thanks to Dee Wolff Sørensen, Peter Franceschi, Anne-Louise Jensen, Charlotte Lyck, Novo Nordisk Fonden, Charlottehaven and Østerbrohuset.

A slow and late start to spring this year - but we are finally moving the bees back to their city homes for the summer. Do look after these bees if you meet them in Østerbro or near the botanical gardens.

In European tradition, people would tell the bees about the births, marriages and passing of those they cared for. In return, the bees shared their honey. These figures will soon become homes for wild bees and keepers of our secrets. Join us to on the 23rd April at Østerbrohuset. Honey for all who participate…link in the comments.
