Moving the bees and sleeping out. At the end of the season we move the bees down from the rooftops to sheltered spots for the winter. We try to close the hives and pick them up at dawn- but this year we found something interesting. It is still so warm that many of the older forager bees ‘sleep out’ instead of coming home. As the sun rises they trickle back to the hive. Where have they been? These bees won’t make it to winter. Perhaps they are feeling sentimental as the nights draw in - cuddling up to a favourite flower, an intimate goodbye. There’s not a lot of nectar left now. The young bees are indoors, preparing for winter.

Pieces of Place. Aref was checking a new spot for the bees near Kløvermarken and found these coins. Two English pennies from 1921, a half penny from 1940 and 5 US cents also from 1940. The area was a military airfield during the war. Perhaps they were dropped by an allied soldier after liberation… In many traditions honey and money were the same. It’s good to imagine how these coins have connected people, just like the honey connects bees, flowers and people. It’s a kind of balance in their story that Aref - a Syrian beekeeper in a patch of Copenhagen industrial scrub - found them and collected them up in 2026.

What’s cooking at Bybi? While we are making the last of the harvest, house artists Peter Bjørn Franceschi and Dee Wolf have been working on the new figure for our ‘Telling the bees’ event at Ørestad Naturdag on Saturday (link in comments). Local, organic, Rye is the most amazing material. And Aref brought back this phenomenal piece of wild honeycomb today. See you Saturday? We hope so!

TELL THE BEES; SHARE THE HONEY - Collect a glass of Bybi honey at Ørestad Naturdag, 22 august (link in comments). In a re-invention of an old tradition, we will be making a new figure together. Tell the figure about a person, relationship or thing that is important to you and it will gift you a glass of local honey. But all gifts come with obligations: Share it with one you care for. Plant a flower to thank the bees. This summer, we have already created MOS, RAV and MIRO together with artists Peter Bjorn Franceschi and Dee Wolff Sørensen. You can help bring the next figure to life! The project is about re-training ecological literacy in Denmark and is supported by Novo Nordisk Foundation.

Harvesting in the last few weeks has felt like standing in a river of honey. Box after box coming in through the door, collected by Aref and his team of strong helpers. Other helpers have been here ready to scrape and spin, amazed at the abundance of this material- gathered one tiny mouthful at a time by the bees. Some frames drip with different colours from different flowers. Others hit you with a scent: Smells that we recognise but can’t place. Chestnut? Kongelund forest? Summer in Fælledparken? This is a peak moment for the bees. From here on the momentum slows as winter already appears on the horizon.

In 1915, danish women won the right to vote. In every village, women got together and planted an oak tree to celebrate. Today, some of the trees have died or fallen - but the democratic spirit lives on in the wood. This is Rav (Amber in Danish). She is made from one of the fallen democracy trees, shaped by Dee Wolff Sørensen and Peter Bjorn Franceschi and completed by people at Kildevæld Kulturcenter to become a home for many kinds of insects. Reviving an old tradition, each participant was invited to ‘tell the bees’ about a person, relationship or thing they value. The messages were woven into Rav’s hair. In return they received a glass of Østerbro honey- but the honey must be shared with one you care for, and you must plant flowers for all pollinators. In this way, we cultivate a community in which Rav and her insect multitudes can thrive.

It’s honey harvest week… after a slow start the bees have caught up and we are expecting almost double the normal first harvest. That often means less in the July harvest in a few weeks. Nature sometimes has a way of knowing what is coming around the corner …

Meet Miro- the new member of the family, now installed at Byfælleden next to Ørestad Arena. In an old European tradition, people would ‘tell the bees’ about changes to their community. We are bringing the tradition back. Miro is a home for wild bees and insects. Honey is the ‘currency of care’ that connects everything together. Share it with one you care for and plant a flower for all pollinators. I love that people wove their messages into Miro’s hair. Thanks to Ørestad Grundejerforening, Novo Nordisk fund and everyone who helped bring life to Miro. We doing it again next Saturday at Kildevands Kulturhus. See you there!
