A late summer update from Our Farm.

August is one of the most abundant times of the year here in Cartmel, with tomatoes, cucumbers and climbing beans in full swing, alongside the last of our summer fruits.

Our Japanese wineberries have made their way south to , while more than 40,000 Red Baron onions have been harvested and are now curing. We’re also clamping our Crimson Globe beetroot to preserve the harvest for use later in the year, with our grapes almost ready to pick too.

And while we’re enjoying the best of summer, we’re already looking ahead. Winter crops are going into the ground and new sowings of kale, chard, leeks and edible flowers are underway for the seasons to come.

Always growing, harvesting and planning for what’s next at Our Farm.

A warm Cartmel welcome to all new faces, from Our Farm.

Each month, we share a glimpse of what’s growing, what the team is harvesting and the work taking place behind the scenes.

July has seen our tomatoes (planted by Sammy, Dan and Matt in May) thriving in the polytunnels, interplanted with marigolds and beginning to bear fruits. Simon’s favourite Oskar sugar snap peas are harvested for our restaurant’s menus, picked young when they’re at their sweetest and most tender.

Elsewhere, the team has been turning over the soil, preparing the radish beds and as always, tending to our “little terminators” - Simon’s preferred nickname for our chickens.

Early this month, we welcomed guests for a wonderfully successful ‘A Day at Our Farm’ experience. Since then we have acquired some new faces and we are excited to share a closer look at our people, produce and growing practices at the heart of what we do.

Update | 12 June on Our Farm.

Following a warm, dry May, the rain arrived just in time, bringing a welcome boost to the fields and polytunnels as summer begins to take shape.

The work never stops here.

From sowing and planting to harvesting produce for our restaurants across the UK, every day brings something new. The chefs have been spending time at the farm selecting ingredients that will help shape the season’s menus, while the team continues to nurture the crops that will appear on plates in the weeks and months ahead.

And, of course, the Year of the Cabbage continues. We’re delighted to see the first succession of Duncan cabbages thriving in the field after beginning life in the nursery earlier this year.

One of the highlights of the month was welcoming guests to June’s ‘A day at Our Farm’ event. Seeing people experience the farm, meet the team and connect with the story behind the food was incredibly rewarding, and a reminder of why we do what we do.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to the team who absolutely smashed it.

Until next month.
