Scotland's salmon farmers have now committed almost £2 million to conservation and river restoration projects through Salmon Scotland's .

In 2026, nearly £230,000 is supporting nine projects across Scotland, from Ayrshire and Galloway to Lochaber, Argyll, Loch Lomond and the Western Isles. The funding will help deliver practical improvements including habitat restoration, riverbank protection, tree planting and new technology to better understand fish populations.

Since launching in 2021, the fund has backed 30 local projects focused on protecting and enhancing Scotland's wild salmon and sea trout populations, with a further £460,000 already committed over the next two years.

What makes these projects so valuable is the local expertise behind them. Led by organisations with detailed knowledge of their rivers and fisheries, the initiatives are helping deliver long-term environmental benefits in communities across the country.

Science and innovation play a vital role in shaping the future of Scottish aquaculture!

From environmental research and data collection to new technologies and low-carbon infrastructure, science is helping drive continuous improvement across Scotland's salmon farming sector while supporting coastal and island communities.

In 2025, salmon producers invested £15-20 million in environmental risk reduction and resilience measures, supporting extensive environmental monitoring programmes including seabed surveys, freshwater mapping, wild fish monitoring and eDNA sampling.

What does the science really say about salmon farming and wild salmon genetics?

Our chief executive Tavish Scott wrote in The Times and The Sunday Times Scotland this week about new research into wild salmon genetics and why some of the claims being made go beyond what the science supports.

Wild salmon face more than 40 different pressures. Understanding those pressures, and acting on the evidence, matters if we are serious about protecting them.

Innovation is creating exciting opportunities for the next generation of aquaculture professionals!

The AECOM Communities Report found that:

🔵 salmon producers delivered 139 apprenticeships in 2025
🔵 achieved 80%+ apprentice retention
🔵 reached more than 8,200 students annually through careers, STEM and education engagement activities

Scotland's farmers have committed nearly £2 million to protecting and restoring across the country through Salmon Scotland's .

This year alone, almost £230,000 is being invested in nine projects spanning , , , , Lomond and the , supporting riverbank restoration, tree planting, spawning habitat improvements and innovative fish-tracking technology.

Since 2021, the fund has supported 30 local conservation projects, with a further £460,000 committed over the next two years.

Jon Gibb, co-ordinator of the Wild Fisheries Fund, said:

“What stands out about these projects is the local knowledge behind them. They are shaped by people who understand their rivers and know where investment can have the greatest impact.

“Several build on work we have supported in previous years, allowing successful projects to develop rather than stopping after one round of funding.”

From restoring eroded riverbanks on the River Ayr to improving spawning grounds on the River Creed in Lewis, these projects are helping local organisations deliver practical, lasting improvements for wild salmon and sea trout.

Our aquaculture careers day at The Nicolson Institute/Àrd-sgoil MhicNeacail in was a fantastic success.

Working alongside Developing the Young Workforce Outer Hebrides, we welcomed more than 170 pupils from across the islands to explore the innovation, technology and diverse career opportunities available within the sector.

At the event, pupils were connected with local employers, highlighting the exciting opportunities available on young people's doorsteps and inspiring the next generation of talent.

DYW coordinator Rebecca Maclead said:
"The Nicolson Institute DYW Aquaculture event, delivered in partnership with Salmon Scotland, provided young people with the opportunity to gain insight into the aquaculture sector and the range of career pathways it offers.

"DYW Outer Hebrides are committed to connecting young people with employers and helping them understand the opportunities available within our local industries.

"It was great to welcome DYW Pledge partners, including Mowi at the event. Events like this strengthen links between schools, employers and the wider community, broadening awareness of local opportunities and encouraging young people to explore pathways such as aquaculture."

More than 170 pupils from across the rolled up their sleeves and got hands-on with at the first careers event of its kind in the islands.

Hosted at The Nicolson Institute/Àrd-sgoil MhicNeacail in alongside Developing the Young Workforce Outer Hebrides, the event brought together employers from across the sector to give young people a hands-on insight into the science, technology and skills that power Scottish .

Students operated underwater robots with Underwater Contracting, explored how robotics are used in aquaculture with MoROV Subsea Solutions, tested their knowledge of fish health with Mowi Scotland, learned about and the with Bakkafrost Scotland, and discovered the science behind salmon with Fish for Health. Scale AQ also challenged pupils to estimate the weight of equipment used on salmon farms, while our stand invited them to design their own salmon farm.

The event showcased the , and diverse opportunities available across 's salmon sector, helping inspire the next generation of aquaculture professionals.

A brilliant day helping young people discover the many career pathways available on their doorstep. A huge thank you to all the organisations who took part.
