There is another bank holiday just around the corner. Monday May 4th is the early May bank holiday, and we will be closed for the day.
This means that our goods in deliveries will be different to normal week's so the following applies:
Saturday 2nd May, open as usual 9-1.
Monday 4th May, closed.
Tuesday 5th May open as usual, but with restricted trade only deliveries.
Deliveries will return to normal on Wednesday 6th May.
***Orders for the week commencing 4th May MUST be with us by 5PM Wednesday 29th of April to allow for buying in of goods.
So have a great long weekend, hopefully in the sun.
But remember, as Fred Pontin said in the 70's. "BOOK EARLY"

A bit of information about Taifun tofu.

Lots of people have been contacting us, wondering what is happening with the shortage of some Taifun tofu products, and we finally have the definitive answer.
Brace yourself, if you love a wiener or the gorgeous Japanese fillets, you are not going to like this.
In an update from Taifun we have received the following:

Lots of soybeans, lower tofu yield

In March, we experienced an unexpectedly low tofu yield from the soybeans used. This means that the ratio of soybeans to finished tofu deteriorated. As a result, we did not meet our production targets, which has had a direct impact on our ability to supply. We responded by switching soybean batches and making further fine adjustments to our equipment, but we were unable to prevent shortages. We do not have inventory reserves to buffer these fluctuations and are operating with very limited stock levels. Our tofu experts are focused and tasked with achieving sustainable improvements in yield.
Delivery reliability remains our highest priority, both for you and for us. To ensure improved stability across our core range, we will not be able to reintroduce the currently paused products to the market in the foreseeable future. Based on our current planning, the following five products will remain discontinued at least until the end of this year:
- Tofu Sausages Tofiner - Tofu Sausages Mild Peppery - Plain Tofu 200g - Tofu Filets Japanese Style - Tofu Filets Wild Garlic

And you thought the world was in a mess already!

Hello All Lembas customers who may have shopped with us on Friday 29th or Saturday 30th Aug. Did you happen to leave behind a car seat? In the car park? with some items in it? We have been holding on to it, thinking you would come straight back for it, but nobody has shown up.
Please let us know the make of the seat, and what might have been left in it to come & collect.

Lembas is Hiring!

Co-op Member – Production/Warehousing

The Job

Lembas is looking for a new staff member to work primarily in our
Production/Bagging department, but who will also be spending some time in our warehouse (further details at the end of this document).
Whilst we are advertising for someone who can begin immediately in our Production/Bagging department, we are also looking for a more rounded skill set. A good level of numeracy, ICT systems knowledge and experience of customer facing roles would be useful.
The Production/Warehousing position is probationary for one year. Successful completion of the probationary period will lead to full co-op membership. As a co-op member you will be given opportunities to take on different jobs – including office administration and customer facing roles – and so contribute more widely to running this successful business. You will also be expected to contribute to the ongoing development of the business and be prepared to attend regular monthly meetings.

Hours: 32 hrs per week Mon - Thurs (normally 07:30 – 16:30)
Wages: ÂŁ12.21/hour for the first 6 months, rising to ÂŁ12.60. Then upon full membership the possibility of a profit sharing bonus.
We also offer a generous holiday allowance, a health cash payment plan (Healthshield), and of course staff discount on all our goods.

About us

Lembas is a wholesale business supplying an extensive range of vegetarian and vegan foods, organic, fair-trade products, and household goods. We supply goods across Yorkshire, Midlands, Peak District, Cheshire and Lancashire – both to businesses and private homes.
We also operate a cash and carry service from our premises which is open to the public as well as having our retail shop “Down to Earth” on Sharrow Vale Road in Hunters Bar.

Lembas started in 1983 and has been a worker’s co-operative since 2016.
You should
• Have an interest in our product range
• Have a good level of numeracy, literacy and ICT
• Be moderately physically fit (lifting up to 25Kgs)
• Have good communication skills and a pleasant manner (you will be working in public facing roles)
• Be in it for the long term (we have a very low staff turnover!)

How to Apply
Please email your CV and a covering letter to: [email protected]
Or if you prefer, drop it in to the warehouse on Whiting Street in Meersbrook, or to Down to Earth, 406 Sharrow Vale Road, in Hunters Bar.
The closing date for applications is Midnight Sunday 21st September 2025
Interviews will be held the week commencing Monday 29th September 2025.
The position becomes available from Monday 6th October 2025.
Lembas is an equal opportunities employer, and we particularly encourage applications from women. If you have not been contacted by Friday 26th September 2025, please consider your application unsuccessful in this instance.

Requirements for the production/bagging department.

In our bagging department, essentially what we do is break down bulk size products 25kg, 12.5kg etc into smaller pack sizes available for sale to trade and private customers as part of our deliveries or cash & carry service.
However, there is a lot more to it than that. You will need:
A good level of cleanliness, accuracy & numeracy to maintain the high standards our customers expect.
Some working knowledge of windows-based computer systems, though full training will be given for our bespoke database which you will use on a day-to-day basis.
The ability to prioritize your workload based on demand, but also organic & non organic separation, Allergen awareness, needs of other departments.
Good interpersonal communication skills. You will be working with a small team but also needing to communicate and respond to both the warehouse and sales/buying team.
A reasonable level of fitness, you will be lifting 25kg bags, sometimes a lot of them.
We would also like you to have a penchant for organization. We are looking for someone who could eventually take on the overall running of the bagging department to improve on how things are set up.
You will receive full training on all aspects of the job, most of which will be by doing the work and learning from more experienced staff.

Requirements for Warehouse department

Initially you will be working in the warehouse on Mondays, which is the day most of our goods in arrive.
Depending on the time of year there can be 10-20 pallets that need stripping down and putting in the correct locations in the warehouse, taking into account stock rotation, goods that may be on order for customers, the health and safety of yourself, other members of staff and customers.
We find this is the best way to get to grips with the large range of goods we carry, and how we work as a wholesale warehouse.
You will also be picking goods to go up to bagging, picking customer orders in small teams and doing the necessary paperwork and loading vans for distribution. This again requires attention to detail and accuracy. You will learn this “on the job” but a systemic attitude to tasks will be a great advantage.

We look forward to receiving your application.
